Wonderful series here Matthew!
I know first hand how hard it is to get here but what is more impressive to me about the series is not the challenges related to getting here, but that you got the right weather. So many people take the pains to get out here but then get totally stumped with boring blue skies... Even when the weather works good (monsoon season) this road washes totally out all the time! So you can not get back home for several days or even weeks sometimes...
Glad it worked out for you so well! Congrats....Show more →
I was definitely scared that El Nino would bring a massive storm just a few days or weeks before the trip, and completely destroy the road. However since El Nino totally fizzled out, the road was perfectly graded. In fact I wound up getting 30 MPG (Subaru Forester) for the ~110 miles between fill-ups in Escalante.
We did bring many days worth of food and water though, just in case. My advice to other adventurers is, be prepared for anything, and never underestimate mother nature!
Weather-wise, we felt like we were making lemonade from lemons, since my whole goal for the past year had been to capture the milky way rising over Reflection Canyon, not to do daytime photos. Having said that, the journey is more important than the destination, as they say. I'll definitely be returning in a future low season, to revisit this amazing place.

What a great experience with some nice pics to show. Your night pics are nice but I like the composition of #5 the best. Just wish it had the golden light and sky of #3 or #4.

Thank you everyone for commenting, and especially for mentioning which photo was your favorite! It is always very helpful to see which shots turn out to be the most popular, I'm sure you all can relate to that feeling of having oddball favorites compared to what others seem to enjoy most. :-)

You DO realize of course that photo 1 will somehow end up in Getty Images or some other stock photo shop's web site for sale. It's fantastic!
Beautiful work!
Cheers, CARL
Carl, that's quite a compliment, thank you! I suppose I ought to watermark my images more when sharing them at higher resolutions. Either that or, apply to join Getty?

Matthew, just look at the "empty space" in the photos and imagine some company putting text in those empty spaces to advertise a product! So, if someone were to get paid for the photo, I think it should be YOU!

Thanks again.
BTW, I finally was able to upload the full timelapse created from one of the images I shared above. You can enjoy it here:
