Here's another marginal bird shot. It was too far away, the light was plain and bright, the composition isn't ideal, and it is hand held.
However, it shows the D500 RAW file has lots of room to play with. I mistakenly overexposed this frame and it looked washed out. But, pretty-much everything was there.
I'm still practicing with the 200-500 f5.6 and getting it tuned. I have been tuning it at the closest focusing distance, and that's probably not best considering I'm chasing birds and not using a blind to get close.
There's no need to "tune" the 200-500. If f/5.6 looks blurry out of the box, return the lens! Nikon telephoto lenses rarely need tuning, except in the feverish imagination of some of their owners.
The D500's combination of instant focus acquisition, superb tracking, and 10 FPS is so good for birds-in-flight. I love this camera. If you're on the fence, just get one... I promise you won't be sorry.
