The video above is a good example of how silent it is in video mode. (When AF focusing done by the camera is deliberately slow and smooth)

BTW Guy, this is how this lens sounds. Perhaps yours is a little bit louder but let's just say it has a noisy personality.

People say that about me. We are called the loud family.

Now did not mention it but externally its about that same level of noise, maybe slightly louder. Funny thing today my AF seemed better. Im kinda at a loss just seems very loud and I understand the different motor but I hear people saying silent and it makes me wonder. I sent that video to my dealer as well which is a small brick and mortar place. Im not stressing over it either . Im totally within returns and warranty stuff. In a way it such a good performing IQ copy I hate to let it go.

Working on test now post soon some bokeh stuff which i did not do early on in this thread

Thanks Fred for taking the time and I'm no video guy either so making sound louder than is or whatever is totally beyond me. Im a still guy and I will die a still guy.

I'm also called the loud family. My grand-parents are from Palermo, Sicily and I have four kids screaming around at any given time!

Wanted to do a little more testing on which I did not do was some Bokeh , DOf stuff. Also the difference between 1.4 and 1.6

This is Chief Bokeh . I asked him if i could take a few snaps and he promised he would not move one bit. Yes I told him humans move all the time and worthless for this stuff. He agreed

Really what i wanted to show here was a typical 3/4 type headshot with the DOF and the Bokeh to get a idea what you maybe facing in the real world. Distance too window is about 12 feet

Now a couple 100 percent crops and lets see the 1.4 and 1.6 variants

Watch the Bokeh between 1.4 and 1.6 as i add more tests. To me for the gain in sharpness at 1.6 compared to the difference in Bokeh rendering to me its very slight bokeh change but bigger increase in sharpness at 1.6 equation. Also here when does that far eye pop in focus if you want it to or not

Fred, my great grandmother was from Barcellona Pozzo di Gotto, just outside of Messina and and my great grandfather was from Grotte.

My father and I are headed over to Sicily for 2 wks at the end of May (part of the reason I'm motivated to get my lens lineup set).

Ciao !

Okay last one for tonight. Im hungry

Vignetting I have not corrected so you can see that effect happening and if you look really close CA until 2.8 and it goes away. Read the words Unique clothing and gifts on the bottom of the letters. I get this on this scene everytime I test a lens

Ok, I think when you focus that GM lens at normal speeds (slow) its actually quieter than a regular FE lens. On my regular FE glass I can always hear a little handling noise via the focussing ring, and if you grip that metal ring too tightly it can bind slightly, but yours is actually quiet there and displays very low handling noise at slow speeds. GOOD!!!

It almost sounds as if there are two motors driving the focus, the slow quiet one and then it steps-up to the faster noisy one (but probably not).

At the end of the day, compared to the Canon 85L (which I found unusable for video) this is actually usable for video. If you could slow that AF WAAAAY down it might sound as quiet as the slow MF.

Where you hitting the rear button AF during video recording? If so, my FE glass does exactly that, ramps up the AF on the rear button press, makes a racket, then calms down to its normal smooth AF-C video focus.

Maybe the only proper lens for video is actually the 24-70 GM, looking at this Sony video anyway? I'd try your test again, in a room with people interacting, see if you pick-up any handling noise or motor noise, I bet you will not in real-world shooting. If I had that on a rig, following focus I bet it wouldn't be noisy either, only when you try to do that snap focus move.

I wouldn't really worry about that, especially if you're not a video guy...... ~Chris

Guy, there is definitely a slight bump from f/1.4 to f/1.6 and the amount of blur is similar but f/1.4 is a bit smoother.
The best feature of the new 85/1.4GM is that it does not matter where you place your subject. Want to have it at the extreme edge of the frame? No problem. The lens is sharp from edge to edge even wide-open.

Excellent example of the background in a portrait situation. The background is very smooth, unobtrusive and fades as it should at all f stops. Sometimes you do wish to have detail in the background and this will be great.
The background smoothness I do relate to the Mandler designed lenses like the 75 Lux. Quite amazing for a modern designed lens.

Chris maybe your right. It's just sounds so weird. I wish I had another copy to compare too. I never ran into a lens that sounded like this and you know how many lenses i have had. Heck I could almost fill lens rental shelves. Lol

Thanks Charlie's I have one more scene to load with background more at distance. I'll load that in morning.

I hope this helping folks get a idea about it. I really really love it . It's certainly one of the best 85 I have had

Very very good point Fred a lot of lenses can't do that. I also played with AFC with lock on AF at 1.6 it was nailing it every time on the scene I'll post in morning . Pretty amazing

Outside the noise thing which I'm still weighing what to there but I really can't find any fault to this lens . Sure CA till 2.8 but this is a 1.4 lens totally expected. Viggnetting I really like too
