I am also heading up to Yosemite this weekend to try and catch this. Likely heading up tomorrow (2/19) and leaving Sunday. But, with the clouds predicted for the next two days, I'm wondering if I should extent till Monday since it's to be clear Sunday/Monday as of now.
If anyone else is around, let me know if you'd like to shoot!
finnianp - The 24th will be among the last few dates (I've gotten the "Firefall" effect as late as the 26th in other years) where you might still expect to see the thin waterfall lit by the setting sun while the rock face is in full shadow.
There will still be dates after that where the waterfall is nicely lit but some of the rock face will also have some degree of light hitting it.
Also, sometimes the waterfall flows at its greatest well into early March but is not lit up to give the full firefall effect. Nevertheless, blowing winds can make for some terrific water swirls and a very satisfactory photo.
Great shot! The sky looks incredible for that much illumination on horsetail. I was lucky to shoot it on a trip a couple years ago, one of my favorite moments for sure.
I think I may be able to escape, but I can't figure out anywhere to stay. Is it possible to sleep in your car? Officially no I see, but I have no idea where I'd stay if I went there. And I'd probably be up all night doing time lapse anyway. I've been wanting to see Horsetail falls for years.
Yikes! Horsetail seems to be enjoying a big 'run' in the news and social media this year. I've seen several horrifying crowd shots that remind me more of Antelope Canyon herds than anything else.

Horsetail Falls was featured on NBC National News tonight. There will be more people than trees now.
Yep. I was there and it was a zoo. However, the people were amazing, with everyone working together the help each other get a decent shot. Even the wait time making new friends was entertaining. The falls were great too, but it was definately more of an urban experience than a wilderness on. Yosemite tends to be that way.
