p.1 #1 · Somebody, please tell me how to disable stupid focus override...

Why is that when I'm clearly in AF mode, rotating focus ring still changes focus?? How do I change this behavior? Basically, I'd like to disengage the focus ring in AF mode. Could someone help me out here, please? I googled the whole universe but couldn't find the answer.

Thank you in advance,
Alan

P.S. My set-up if it matters: Sony a7Rii + Metabones + Canon 85mm f/1.2L

Functions as designed- learn to not change the focus ring when you don't want to change focus .

(there is no 'override', and the ability to manual focus using the focus ring at any time is a feature)

Thanks for the reply. I understand some advantages of ability to override focus manually in AF mode, but it shouldn't be the only option. It's autofocus mode after all. When I was with Nikon (can't remember which lens), I didn't have to worry about accidentally rotating focus ring in AF mode; it was fully disengaged. Makes sense.

For the majority of good lenses, the focus ring is physically connected to the focus helix. There is no way to disconnect it. The lens is designed from the beginning to enable manual focus during AF, and there's no way to turn it off.

Some cheap lenses don't allow manual focus during AF - the focus ring locks up - but these are lenses using a different focus motor and a simpler design. Because these lenses were designed to be really cheap, they don't include the bits that allow manual focus during AF. (I think it requires something to be double-ended, with the focus ring driving one end, and the motor driving the other)

The 85 / 1.2 happens to be one of the few "focus by wire" lenses. In theory it might be possible for it to be turned off. In practice it is only turned off when power is removed from the lens.

Given that the manufacturers go to a fair bit of effort to enable manual focus during AF, and yours is the first request I've seen to disable that, I suspect you may have no luck. You could always look for the cheapest lenses...

Base on my knowledge, the 85L is focus-by-wire. On a Canon body like 5D3, there is an option to disable/enable manual focus override for focus-by-wire lenses (such as 50L, 85L).

But Sony camera doesn't operate that way! Native E-mount lens with focus-by-wire will be automatically disabled focus ring when the camera is in AF mode. To use the ring you must switch to MF or DMF in the camera.

Problem is: Sony camera does not recognize that the Canon lens has this feature (because it's not a native lens), so it treats the Canon lens as a normal lens with physical manual focus mechanism.

So all you can do is trying not to touch the focus ring when using AF.

Aha! Now it makes sense.

Thank you, everyone, for your replies.

All I can suggest is by trial and error tape over the lens and/or adapter contacts on the rear one by one to see if this could be a workaround.

Some adapters don't support DMF, so if you get one of those your problem will go away.

Another possibility is that a later firmware for your adapter will go in the other direction: support DMF when and only when it's turned on, which I guess is what one really wants....

if it is a focus-by-wire lens - just duct tape the focus ring to the lens body and your problem is gone
