Hi Ted, I don't use a tripod as it is cumbersome and limiting for me, especially when traveling. Even in a blind, not being limited to a tripod is advantageous in that you can instantly point your lens at the right perch when there are multiple perches with multiple birds in action. The Canon 400 DO II is light enough that I can get sharp shots hand held down to about 1/50sec.
