I think the frustration part stems from their inability to provide an accurate update. I would have been fine with the telling me "allow up to 14 days from door to door". However, it seems as if I hadn't started screaming, it would still be sitting on their shelf.
Mine was shipped on a Monday=== arrived in MA on the following Monday --- and i received it today Friday. I had called them on Thursday---yesterday and they said they had no record of when it was shipping. Then I got an email Friday am saying it was shipping on Thursday morning... So it is not horribly inefficient just as stated -- chain of communication is poor.
Usually, when a company sends product to you, they send a notice and tracking number. This is just standard procedure and there's an obvious reason for it. I never got a tracking number for my return camera.
So after opening my replacement and shooting a little, I'm finding that the focusing ring isn't as smooth or tight as the first one I had. It works properly but doesn't feel right. The best way I can describe it is that it's as if there's grains of sand rubbing as I turn the ring. If I hold it really gently and turn it slowly it feels fine but as soon as I apply any amount of grip and/or turn the ring quickly it feels off. Anyone else finding this with either their originals or replacements? Surely Sony won't replace this one and I'm sick at the thought of sending it out for repairs.

That describes exactly my original RX and its replacement. It has zero effect on anything, so I don't worry about it.
My guess is we are feeling the tiny servos moving lens groupings in order to focus by wire.

Well that's a relief. Yeah it sort of feels like the ring itself is rubbing against something, only it's not. Is that how you'd describe yours as well?

They sent tracking number and notice to my phone number few hours before Fedex making delivery.

I just thought of something. Mine does this regardless of whether the camera is turned on. Would the servos still be moving when the camera is turned off?
I don't think I've ever posted here before, though I have this old account from way back when I bought Web Presenter on FM. Anyhow, thought I'd give my testimony being that I'm in Europe and the situation is grimmer from what you're describing in the US.
So to first give a little bit of context, I've been a huge fan of the original RX1 since I got a second-hand copy in Japan when on vacation in the summer of 2013. The camera was a Japanese model, so it came with all-Japanese menus, which made it impossible to change the language, but made it for a really special camera and experience from the get go.
Forward a couple of years, and as soon as I heard about the new RX1RII, I called by local photo store and reserved one. Got it a few months later, and fell in love with it all over again. I even posted first thoughts on my blog, but was totally unaware of this light leak problem until a couple of days ago.
The local store owner sent me a cryptic email asking me to give him a call about the camera as soon as possible. I thought that was strange, but could be that Sony was running a promotion or something, though the tone of said email was odd to start with.
Gave him a call and he mentioned the store had been contacted by a UK Sony engineer letting him know about the problem and that Sony was adamant about getting problematic cameras back ASAP, and replacing them for new units. Mine is in the 7360xxx range and is affected — tested it with my iPhone flashlight and was able to reproduce the issue in under 30 seconds. I hadn't run into the problem in real-world situation, but it doesn't make it excusable. Like others, I'm worried that we're only seeing light leaks so far, but that in a couple of months the sensor becomes dirty and/or unusable.
Long story short, I'm dropping my camera back in the shop on monday, but they already told me they don't have replacements yet, so consider yourselves lucky that you only have to wait 3-6 days for a new unit. I'm afraid I now have to wait a couple of months for a new camera... While I appreciate Sony on being proactive and supportive here, I think they should have a bunch of units ready to go out to shops or direct to customers straight away.
Thought I'd share my story from the other side of the pond, to put the issue into perspective. For me, it's reassuring to know a lot of people are going through the same separation anxiety I am, and we're all in this together, at least while some of us don't quit on Sony altogether.
Re: focus ring: I've got the same grain-y feeling on the RX1R2 ring, but can tell you this is not the case with my original RX1 — that one is smooth as silk. That was also one of the things that struck me when getting the new model, but as long as it works properly, I'm happy.
Net bird. You still should be using your original RX1rII, until they have a replacement. Either that, or give you a refund. they can't just take your camera off you.

You're right, I shouldn't have to give up the camera until they have a new one for me. Tho only advantage about my situation is that the issue is dealt through the store rather than Sony directly, so I have someone to physically talk to and discuss the options.
Yes, good luck getting a quick replacement netbird.
As an aside, I was going to do some tests on my original RX1Rii, but didn't get a chance before the recall.... but my impression for whatever reason was that the meter on my original camera was running a little hot. Replacement is dead on for what I would expect based on my A7R and A6000. The only reason I'm bringing this up is in case anyone is finding they have to dial in more negative exposure comp than they would expect with your camera, you're not the only one who is crazy.
This may have been mentioned, but I searched and found nothing, but does anyone know if they are replacing the cameras if purchased used? I got mine from BH this week and the serial numbers match AND I was able to replicate the light leaking issue. I am about to give them a call, but was curious if anyone knew the answer already.
Quick Update - Just got off the phone about my used RX1rii. She said they are doing overnight shipping to them as well as overnight shipping for the replacement to me. Processing time is 2-3 business days. I am doing several photo sessions this week so I told her I would call back to get my shipping label when I was ready to ship sometime next week. So far so good...
wondering if they mentioned your missing battery? Or did your new one come without? I might have already lost my eyecup... so wasn't sure how they would respond.
Hi. My name is Kiko. I am new to the forum and had been following this conversation about the rx1r ii. I have two pieces of information that I think might answer other user's questions. First. I bought an open box from a retailer and it was within the s/n that were under this recall batch. I sent it in and they are exchanging it without question. Also, I found out that even when you sent your "defective" camera to Palmer MA, the new one is being handled by their warehouse in Carson CA. Therefore, there is NO connection between the two sites in order to determine if a battery was missing etc... Another point is that they have now the option of repairing it as well, so replacement is an option for them to take. One way or the other, the criteria is that the camera is within the numbers that were recalled. Thanks and peace to all. My fedex number got to me through fedex and not through sony... One way or the other is going to be here tomorrow. So, I am expectant. Peace to you all. kiko
