Though hopefully Nikon will have their VR issues with lighter bodies figured out; it's really unfortunate to have seen problems with the D750 + 300/4E PF combination, and an upgrade in resolution would only make that problem appear worse!
Yes, this is a major concern that made me hold off on buying a D750 + 300PF. Nikon is certainly aware of this now, but we will have to see if the new cameras have solved the problem.

I think they just skipped the D400 as a name since the number 4 I believe is unlucky or disliked in Japan. There's a reason why Panasonic for m4/3 cameras skipped the Panasonic naming the camera after the Panasonic GF3, the GF4 going from the GF3 directly to the GF5.
The number 4 sounds like the word for death in Chinese (Mandarin, I believe). When that is said, Nikon did have the D4 and Panasonic has the GH4, so superstition seems to be mostly for the amateurs

I think the naming convention is clear: D5 D500 SB5000

Some mixed info out there....DPR says no to pop up flash, nikon site says yes. DPR says xqd plus sd slots, others say 2 sd slots.
I have a d810 and a d750 now...but would consider the d500 to replace the d750 if the iq and low light performance check out. I've never really bought off on the 'extra reach' of a dx sensor since it really is only a narrower fov that you get for cropping, but as others have said this could be a really good dedicated wildlife camera.
Personally I'd be disappointed to see xqd slot and no on board flash..the former is expensive and requires a seperate reader, and the latter just flat out comes in handy sometimes when you don't want to, or don't have time to, strap on a 'real' flash.
the pop up flash however is a little questionable, the nikon spec sheet says "built in flash = yes" but in the images there is no visable pop up flash or button to deploy it.

If you look at the pictures from the tech sheet, there doesn't appear to be a popup flash.
I remember the days of the D3/D300 and the mythical D700 soon after that was the Nikon grandslam of a decade ago almost
Dang the D7xxx used market as well as the D700 was just schlonged, . I can even see the D4/D4s used tanking.
I shoot a lot of indoor fast action sports. Loved the pixel density and accepted the ISO up to 6400 ISO of the 36Meg sensors. The D810 was great, a camera with similar pixel density, improved high ISO, faster FPS and better focus.. dang what a dream! Glad I just sold my D810. Was thinking I would think about the D5, but the D500 looks to exceed everything that the D4/D4s can do at the moment. Will be interesting to see how 25600 ISO on D4s stacks up to the D500!
I’m perfectly positioned with a combination of XQD, CF and SD from my D4/D810 to do a D4 and D500 combo. Happy Happy Happy… Nikon got me to buy new with the 24-70 VR ( a mistake ), but hopefully won’t fool me with any quality issues with the D500. I’ll be beating down the doors of my local store for one!
For further durability, the D500 excludes a pop-up flash, yet is compatible with Nikon’s newest radio frequency capable flash, the SB-5000 Speedlight (with optional WR-R10 & WR-A10)1.

Haven't used a pop up flash in over 6 yrs
Same here ... at least as a light source ... although, used the pop-ups on my D300/D300s bodies several times in commander mode ... thus freeing up another SB800 or SB910 to be used off-camera.
I can live without that considering the overall specs of the D500. Absence of a pop-up is a small consideration considering the glass is almost overflowing with all the other goodness included.
So tempted to pre-order but will wait and see how the early adopters make out first. All my current gear is working is working great, no pressure to move just yet.
