I've been using DPP since 2006 and always been happy with it. However, I just installed version 4.3.31 on my brand new iMac 5k with 32 GB RAM and it is so slow that I can't use it! For example it takes 10 seconds for an image to "sharpen up" when I open it and 8-10 for it to react when I use for example the exposure slider.
Can this really be true? Are there any ways to speed things up or do I really need to go back to DPP 3?
DPP 4 seems reasonably peppy to me, at least on my old Mini i7 (quad) under OS 10.11.2. It's faster than Aperture and LR at similar tasks. I felt like DPP 4 (and Premier and Creative Suite for that matter) were faster under OS 10.9.5. If the computer is really new, system overhead (Spotlight cataloguing) can really eat processing power for a couple days.
I had DPP 4 running with Windows 7. It would crash sometimes, but I could re-install it and all was O.K. I changed to Windows 10 perhaps 2 months ago, and it ran O.K. for two months. Now DPP 4 won't function, and when I consider re-installing it, the Canon website says there is no version of DPP 4 to run under Windows 10 64 bit, but Canon is working on a fix. So I am now shut out of raw conversion with DPP 4. Does anyone any suggestions? I may now have to use PhotoShop CS6 for raw conversions.
I should perhaps also add that opening up DPP 4 itself as well as populating folders is lightning fast. However, as soon as I open a RAW image (5D MkII), it slows right down...
This probably won't help but I have done some comparisons between finished files from DPP3 and DPP4 and found no difference at all. The underlying software appears to be exactly the same to me.
I see no benefit in using the slow clunky mess that is DPP4 at all, especially as half my cameras aren't even supported.
I had to give up using DPP for culling photos as well. It was always a little boggy but when I switched to a 4K monitor it became unusable. As you mentioned it just takes too long for the photos to sharpen up.
I'm using a 2013 Mac Pro with 32GB of memory and D700 graphic cards.
I'm trying Photo Mechanic again and it seems much faster but has a worse interface. My Kingdom for BBPro on OSX.

Thanks for the reply, Gochugogi.
My iMac 5k is three days old and I'm on the newest OS. No idea what Spotlight Cataloguing is. How do I check if it's running?
I should mention that everything else appears to run very fast, such as Photoshop handling120MB TIFF files.
Spotlight is the Mac's internal search function/app. Click on the wee magnifying glass on the top right to invoke it. The first few days of a new drive, computer or OS it's busy cataloging all your files and will slow down the computer. Once catalogued, everything goes back to normal. I have six external drives full of images, audio and video, so it took a really long time...
I've used DPP 4 a lot and it's extremely stable and fairly fast on my Mac. However, I'm using a lowly 2560 x 1440 Cinema Display so that may have something to do with it.
I have found DPP is slow when it comes applying NR and processing. I don't like that you can't disable NR in the preferences. I do use it to preview and cull. Nothing looks better to me than quick check and full screen. After culling my files wind up in PS or LR.
I tried using DPP to review, check the focus point and cull. The slowness was more than annoying. I now use Breezebrowser Pro. Very fast, shows the focus point and has file management to move images to my Lightroon folder for processing. Great software.
I haven't tried DPP4 all that much but my guess is that it is slow generating the large preview to fill the high resolution of the 5K iMac each time you open the RAW and start working. When I return home next week I will see how it works on my 5K iMac and report back.
On my 15"rMBP it takes 1 second to render the image sharp at normal view and about 2.5 seconds to render it if I'm already in 1:1 view and switch to the next image. Not the fastest thing but LR probably takes just as long which is why I have LR make all the 1:1 previews before I even start working on a new batch of files.
I don't know the Apple version but DPP4 is much slower on a Windows computer than 3 was.
I have a 6 core cpu at 4.5GHz, SM951 M.2 PCIe ssd, 64GB ram etc. and processing the 5DsR files is very annoying to say the least. It's downright painful on a typical dual core laptop. I attribute it to inefficient coding and hope that Canon makes some changes to bring it back to DPP3 speeds.
I have both DPP3 and DPP 4 installed on a plain vanilla Dell i7 12GB from Costco with a SSD added for programs to reside on. Sharpness adjustments are nearly real time, NR takes 1 second. It takes about 1-2 seconds to save a edited file.
I can't tell any difference between ver 3 & 4. Lightroom 2015CC is faster, so I very seldom use DPP. (Lightroom does not save the edited file, just records the changes in the database which is why it appears to be faster.)
I find it strange that some are seeing a slow response, but that's common for a lot of software. A conflict can exist that causes slow operation but does not otherwise manifest itself. That type of issue can be very difficult to pin down.
I tried playing around with the resolultion of the screen of the iMac. The default setting is "looks like 2560 x 1440". When I use that it takes app. 8 seconds to load a RAW image. If I increase it to the highest resolution (which is oddly called "looks like 3200 x 1800" rather than the 5120 x 2880 resolution that the screen is supposed to be), then it takes app. 10 seconds. However, if I decrease it to the lowest setting ("looks like 1600 x 900"), then it suddenly takes less than a second to load a RAW image!
Based on the above I get the feeling that DPP 4 is not designed to handle a 5k monitor. I was going to re-install it but now I'm considering installing DPP 3 instead. Frustrating, as I really like DPP as a RAW converter and liked some of the new features in DPP 4. It's just weird how DPP 4 ran medium fast on my old iMac and now is super slow on my new iMac at a similar resolution settings (and with an SSD drive and much more RAM).

Arbitrage, please do let me know how it runs on your 5k iMac, thanks!!
