Stone Temple Pilots singer Scott Weiland found dead at 48 on tour in Minnesota. I photographed Scott at my studio in the late 90's for Mackie Designs - the audio company. We were told that if you wanted him there at noon, you'd tell him to show up at 10:30 am. Well, we did that and he showed up at 10:30, which must have been pretty early (or late) for him. I made him coffee while we waited for the makeup artist to get there.
Amazing job Peter. Such a shame and a waste. Fore some reason, I've been listening to old STP recently and was wondering if he ever got himself straightened out. So sad.
Did I talk with him? Yes, but maybe not as much as some people I photograph. I remember after he got to the studio that I got a call from his publicist asking if I had a bucket of ice water around. Whatever for I asked. Well, Scott had too much soy sauce the night before and his eyes were puffy. Got three bags of ice from Beverage Warehouse next door, dumped 'em in a Coleman cooler, filled it with water and, yes, he did soak his face in ice water. I knew his reputation at that point and I just figured that that was their way of dealing with things so I went along with it. Actually, my immediate internal reaction was "Soy sauce - really??"
Here's a link to an article with his last two recorded interviews, which are quite revealing once you ignore the stupidity of most of the questions. I guess I was surprised to hear him cite Bowie as a major influence, but I can see (or hear) that now.
I loved STP back in the day, always felt like they were too often (and unfairly) dismissed by many as Pearl Jam lite. You could almost project Weiland's demise once the band broke up for good. Good story, great image. RIP SW.

Both Stone Temple Pilots formed around the same time and there is nothing "lite" about the Stone Temple Pilots. That term likely came from Pearl Jam fan boys. Again, great photo and I think it does an excellent job of capturing Scott Weiland at his best.
