I'm new to photography and I've been shooting since April of this year. Here are a few recent shots of my son who seems happy to let daddy practice. CC is most welcome! All shot with a Nikon D5500, Nikkor 50mm 1.8G lens, and edited in Lightroom.

Wow, thank you! I've fallen for photography and I'm constantly trying to improve. I have come a little way in the few months I've been shooting but I want to get better.
you have captured great moments in some of these. I would say that you have a great eye for photography and your technical skills seem to be very good in these too. Well done.
I agree with the others. Technically spot on and compositions are strong with good attention to expression, emotion, eye contact (when necessary), lighting.
I do not frequent this forum but I suspect you will continue to learn more both here and if you post on Critique where the culture is for more extended and critical comments, as appropriate. On the other hand, the quality of your work so far seems on par with the high quality images I emulate on People.
A boy & his fish is my favorite but all of these are just fine.
Looks as if you have the hang of it.
Enjoy the hobby. Any parent would be extremely happy with these, congrats!

Thank you! I have been shooting since purchasing my first DSLR in April of this year. While I was saving for the camera, I was studying and researching online as much as possible. By the time I got my camera, I had a good understanding of the exposure triangle and metering so, I started in manual right away. I seem to be doing alright with my exposure so I've really started to focus on composition. I've recently started to dabble in flash photography too. I got a speedlight a couple of months ago which has helped my photos dramatically in the low light. Eventually I will move on to off camera flash but I have to walk before I can run and I do not want to try taking on too many things at once. Plus, I'm the sole provider for my family of 5 and the bills won't pay themselves lol. Still getting used to the manual aspect of the flash as I do not use TTL but other than an occasional hot spot, I've been alright.
I'm happy to have inspired you and it feels great that I've done so! I'm happy with my progression thus far but I have a strong desire to do even better. I've developed quite a passion for photography and if some day I can get paid to enjoy my hobby, I'll take it. Otherwise I'm happy enjoying it as I am now.

I've been an avid phtographer and FM member for about 11 years. I have learned a ton from this generous and talented community, but am just getting to the point where I can share some portraiture and feel OK about it.
I have learned a ton on Critique in particular, where I tend to hand and where others have generously critiqued my evolving work. Stop by!

C'mon, you even numbered your shots, clearly your research has paid off! I've been working on this much longer (and I'd say you're already far better at this than me) and I'll say you have an eye for this. Surely with further honing your skills you will get much better, but you're starting off on a solid foundation.
For my tastes, 4 is absolutely priceless and 3 is unique, with the strip of light across his eye and the fantastic colors of the fishbowl making it a captivating piece. The look on my face is similar to his.
Wow thank you so much! #3 was definitely outside of the box for me. He was by the fish tank and I saw how the light was shining against his face and I thought hey, this would be a cool shot. Turns out, it was and this is a memory I'm happy to keep.
I appreciate your feedback and I'm starting to feel a bit more confident in my work.
