Last month I went camping in the Badlands and experienced a variety of different conditions and light. I found the absolutely most gorgeous time to be well before sunrise. These two are from my first and last days out there.
Thanks guys! These two particular mornings were magical.
My first morning I had the whole area to myself, not another soul in sight and as I set up looking to the east over a canyon, I turned around and saw what was happening behind me and scrambled to find a spot. The results were the first one I posted.
What cool shots here, and what a great time it sounds like you had. I like both of them, but lean towards the B&W as my favorite. Partly because I like how the ground layer is lit better, with a greater difference between the light and shadow area's in the rocks. It helps give some depth to the shot. Now if you could do a little touch up with the ground layer in #1 to have that same feel, I think #1 would be in another world!
I'm not typically a B&W guy, but you have done a masterful job in #2 with the tonal range and your choice of composition.
Super cool looking place with all the jagged peaks and striations.
Very well done.
