Horrible hood no more, folks. For ~$25 get yourself a 95mm to 105mm step up ring
and a 105mm metal hood off the 'Bay. Added bonus: Cir Pol betwixt the two allows
for rotation by simply turning da hood. Consider this a public service announcement.
(I leave my hoods in shooting position 24/7/365 and forgo any lens caps.
If this makes you nervous, kindly disregard my suggestions)

Nervous, no but it makes for a real long lens bag when you are toting a 800 f5.6 lens and adding an eight inch long hood to it.

Pretty sure I'm referring to the 200-500 and a paltry 3"
If I had an 800 I doubt I'd be hittin' this thread.
My 200 f2/300 f2.8's store well, my long zooms are
only "long" when aroused...cough, er extended.
Yeah, I don't use that POS either. Nikon's out of their mind on plastic pricing.
Might want to hire someone to design decent tripod collars. Just a thought.
Not sure I want a hood of that size attached to the filter threads (vs) the outer rim of the lens per the Nikon included "POS". The 200-500mm threads are plastic, one significant bump could crack the front ring of the lens and leave you with an expensive repair. Any other options?
The drawback would be the total length with the hood, depending on the bag/backpack. I'd never try to travel with a 600/4 or 200-400/4 and hood in shooting position.

Nikon does a good job on tripod collars for lens that come with a carbon fiber lens hood.
I have the 80-400mm VR II, 500mm f4, and the 200-500mm and of the three the best lens hood is the one provided with the 200-500mm lens. It is a thicker plastic and much less likely to break or crack as with the hoods on the other two lenses, and replacement hoods for these are very expensive. The 200-500mm lens hood is the only one where I do not have to be very careful so as not to have it crack.
Out in the field I usually position myself so the sun is not in front of me and my subjects are lit from the front so I don't mount the hood off the lens I am using and leave it in the backpack.

Yup! I kept the metal replacement hood when I sold my 120-300, Graeme.
