p.1 #1 · Anyone go from 7DII -> 5Ds R for wildlife?

I have a 7D (original) and am going to move to a new camera for wildlife. Actually, the last few years I was using a 5DIII for wildlife because I found I ended up with better resolution most of the time as the 5DIII would give me more in-focus pictures.

Now I'm debating between the 5DsR and the 7D2. Essentially both give the same pixels per duck. Both use essentially the same sensor tech so they are pretty equal at the per pixel level. (The 7D2 does seem to have its DR tuned more toward high ISOs.)

I have also been using an A7r for landscapes. I am somewhat concerned about its reliability/ weather resistence so my thought process was I could get a 5DsR and it could serve as a landscape backup as well as good AF/wildlife camera.

The way I see it, the cons of the 5DsR over the 7D2 are:

- half the fps (I had 6fps on the 5D3 which didn't seem to be a big deal for me)
- Less cross-points (mostly on outer points I'm not sure I'd use in wildlife)
- Lower drive speed without extenders
- worse weather sealing

I'm not sure about shutter lag or mirror blackout times.

Anyway, am I missing anything? I'd really be interested in people's experiences.

Thanks,
Chris

I wish I had that wildlife experience with my 5DS R to offer some help, but I'll at least suggest I had similar thoughts/experiences as you.

The 5DS R is an excellent landscape camera as well - you'll appreciate that Canon has finally eliminated the pattern noise in shadows and the usable DR seems more substantially improved than the DXO ratings would suggest (I have an a7R (and an a7R II) for landscapes as well.).

Since the pixel density is about the same between 7D II and 5DS R, there is a chance the 5DS R would give you sharper/slightly more detail since the low-pass filter is cancelled.

OTOH, if you are happy with the a7R as your main landscape camera you could buy a slightly used second a7R here on FM and get a new 7D II. It would give you three total cameras for less cost than a7R + 5DS R.

For my part, the a7R II was a must-buy in the sense that it AFs so well with my Canon lenses that I can use them on either a7R II or 5DS R indiscriminately. Really love that combo.

Are there lenses in your arsenal that this doesn't hold true as strongly ... i.e. on the longer end of things, older lenses, do you start seeing a difference?

I have an A7R for landscapes and have had great luck with the 7D2 for racetracks, even in single-point AF with a 100-400 II & 1.4TC at f/8, so I have to believe it'd serve you well with wildlife.

For me- the 5DR was too much $$ to consider right now when you can get an A7R for around $1k. But- I'm keeping my eye on it in the future as I think it'd serve anyone well for landscapes.

I have 11-24, 24-70 II, and 70-200 f/4 IS and they all AF very well on the a7R II. However, 100-400 I users report sluggish AF @ 400mm even with the latest Metabones firmware update (an update that makes even more (older) Canon lenses AF well on the a7R II). a7R II users that want a 400mm lens may be better served with the Sony 70-400mm II, which by all accounts performs very well on the a7R II.

I am not a high performance AF shooter, so I can only state that the AF works brilliantly for my limited needs, but can't speak to photography requiring more advanced AF performance.

Not from the 7D2, but the 70D and similar crop bodies. The ability to crop is nice and not be restricted by a too narrow angle is better yet. It's like having a zoom. The main caveats are FPS and buffer.

I assume you are speaking about the 5DsR? yes, that is one big advantage - less likely to chop off something in the field.

Thank you all for the replies so far!

I am using the 5Ds for birds in flight - I don't like 5fps (prefer the 6fps of the 5D3...and even my significant other's 7D2 = 10fps...that does make a noticeable difference in the keeper rate).

Anyway, here are a few shots of BIF from Brigantine (Forsythe NWR) and Cape May in New Jersey from early October.

Compared to the 5D3, I need to shoot at a faster shutter speed to get critically sharp images. Where 1/2000 sec exposure would be good for the 5D3, it seems that 1/3200 to 1/5000 is better on the 5Ds.

Lesser Yellowgs at 1/5000 sec

Cooper's Hawk (hatch-year) in flight at 1/2500 sec

Forster's Tern at 1/5000 sec

I have some experience with the 5DSR shooting wildlife. I found the autofocus OK, but did not spend a lot of time adjusting the parameters to optimize it. The 5 frames per second was OK, and I am kind of used to a lower rate, but I sure did fill the buffer up easily, which was frustrating. I ended up buying a 7D2 mostly for wildlife, and appreciate the reach it gives, plus a buffer that is about twice as large.

I will continue to use my 5DSR for landscape and general uses, but the 7D2 is for moving wildlife. They are both fine cameras.

Once addicted to 50MP, it is very difficult to go back to 18/20/22MPs.
Frame rate and buffer could be better but you can get the shot( most of the time).
