p.2 #1 · Family Portraits by the Sea

I like these alot. I like the second one more because of your daughter's expression and it doesn't have the posts.

Since this pair seem to naturally go together as a set, I wonder if you had taken a photo of just yourself without the posts, facing to the left. Then you could display the pair together as a diptych with you facing toward your wife+daughter.

Thanks for your comments and feedback! You know, I thought about doing something like that, but by the time we started shooting me looking in the other direction, the light had dropped off considerably. Worse, having me look the other way created a dark shadow on my face that would have required external lighting to remedy. We didn't feel comfortable enough with the intensity of the tides to break out the portable battery light, fearing it might be consumed by the raging seas.

Maybe we should try again; my outfit cleans up far easier than my wife's.

Epic, beautiful and creative work.
In looking at these I had assumed a composite of a somewhat long exposure of the water and normal speeds for a sharp image of the subjects. But in reading your work flow my impression is it was one le shot. Is this correct?

Very nice..my favorite also would be the 2nd.

Love the pastel colors, maybe it's the processing , but to me they have a feel of early morning light and the promise of whats to come vs late evening or end of day. I believe the 2nd works a little better for me due to the lightness in tone of the blurred surf foam moving more at a 45 deg diagonal vs straight on as in the 1st. Also like the 2nd as the subject not quite as centered as in the 1st image.

Believe that both these images would translate well on canvas, and deserve a prominent display in the home.

Regards.

Thanks for looking! You are correct in that some composite work was necessary for the baby, since she doesn't know how to hold still. We shot using a variable ND filter and toggled Lv to move quickly between settings, such that we could get the images close together in time. My wife and I generally were able to hold still enough to be sharp for a 1/8 or 1/4s exposure, but our daughter was not so cooperative, so we had to composite her in from adjacent exposures at a faster shutter speed.

Thanks! We definitely plan to print these to canvas and give them to our parents as gifts. I appreciate your thoughts, and if we revisit this concept, I will keep your notes in mind.

You, sir, are brilliant.
What a fantastic concept and shoot. I think I like the second photo better. Just because your wife's serious looks and your daughter's chuckle create a beautiful contrast.

Lovely pictures ! I also have a slight preference for the second one (although both are excellent). I think it's because your wife looks so strong while the colors and the lighting are really soft. These are great family memories .

Cheers,

Tijana
