Have been photographing this little one since her newborn session. She has changed so very much not only physically from her cleft pallet surgeries but also in personality. She use to be so shy and timid but man has she ever come out of her shell and is so much fun to photograph. There was too many good ones to choose from so it was hard to cull and scrap the rest away :/

These are a fantastic series of shots. Well done. #8 is my favorite as it shows the whole family.
Before I had the chance to read your note at the top, I saw the 1st picture and immediately recognized the scars associated with cleft pallet. It's wonderful that she was able to get if fixed and it has had a commensurate change in her self esteem. Is she all done with the surgeries or will they be doing more work as she gets older?

Thanks Andre, yes she has a few more surgeries to go but shes done for now. I believe in a few years she will start back up and some of that includes cosmetic surgeries for her nose and lip. She has made leaps and bounds for sure and its unbelievable how strong kids are and what they persevere through.
her mother now works for CHOA in Atlanta and has dedicated more time and resources to helping other kids and organizations to receive similar types of treatments as well in other countries.

Wonderful, Shaun. I absolutely love her smile, I remember your last post with her as well. As a father with a son who was born with both cleft lip and palate, these have a special significance to me and put a huge smile on my face, so thanks for sharing them.

Thanks for the follow-up. I was afraid there would be more surgeries. My late wife was a speech pathologist and used to work with kids who had cleft pallet. But, as you correctly pointed out, children are amazingly resilient, especially if they have lots of love as this little girl clearly does.

Just my D800E and a Nikon 58 1.4G and 85 1.4G. mostly the 58mm 1.4 though. I try my best to wait fro the best time of day for soft light or back lit shots. I look for catch lights in the eyes. then in lightroom and photoshop I bring down the exposure of the back ground only using layers which helps the subject pop more off the photo which I think is a HUGE thing.. almost like using careful vignette.
I try to process my images keeping the colors accurate and bright. I used to be big into lifting the blacks with curves but i stopped doing that unless the image suits that or is a darker image which i think would benefit from that. if I want haze then I try to get it naturally by shooting into the sun slightly for a natural warm haze.
