Here are 2 shots, a horizontal and a vertical from the rice terraces in Banaue in the Philippines taken about a month ago. The most difficult part of this shot was getting the driver to wake up in time to drive us up to this area. As it was the color was starting to hit the clouds as the trike was still making its way up the road, and I was concerned I might miss this great color. I then made a quick 3 minute run down to this location that I had scouted and shot the day before. I still had a couple of minutes to get in a couple of compositions before the color faded, but it still faded faster than I would have liked.
I slightly prefer the second as it gives more depth with the leading lines.
I know, more color is desirable, but I think these are nice with it being subtle.
Makes me wish I could go back to times when I did biz in Japan. Only did minimal tourist stuff back then. There were a lot of areas like this on the island of Shikoku.
I like both images, Jim. However, after looking at them for awhile the second has become my favorite. Glad you successfully rousted the driver. Wonder what he thought of the morning.
Chuck
Both are very nice Jim. I echo the others and (slightly) prefer the 2nd. FYI though, you have some dust bunnies in the top right corner of the 2nd image
It is the first for me. I love you use of leading lines in both compositions. The sky is beautifle in the second yet I feel there is too much resulting in subject confusion. Possibly crop some of the sky for the vertical. The first lets me enjoy all those terraces that create great bands of color and texture.
While both have their strong points, I end up unequivocally preferring the second. The sinuous lines are much more effective in the second, and even the sky seems to play along with that in the second. Really nice shots.
#2 for me as well. Great leading lines and the mud bank doesn't detract, it's depicts reality. For some reason #1 doesn't give me the same vibe despite the strong lines again.
I would like to see them posted larger as so much detail is lost at this size (at least for me and my eyes) ! Though I notice no copyright so maybe that's why they are posted smaller ?

Thanks Dan! I am glad you like these. You should make a trip back to Japan it sounds like!

Great images, Jim. The line formed by the wall in the portrait image really works for me.

Hey Bart, I appreciate that. I am torn between the two which is why I posted both of them. What you stated about #2 is also what I like about that shot.

Hey Chuck, I appreciate that! I am not sure I can pick a favorite yet, but I do appreciate knowing what others think about them. And yeah, fortunately we had the phone # for the driver and when he didn't show up we started to call him. Glad we ended up making it just in time.
I like everything about both images. Great colors, and composition. My choice would be decided by usage more than any technical differences.
Great job on these Jim. So often when traveling catching good conditions is a hit or miss deal. looks like you worked hard to optimize your chances, and were well rewarded. I am sure that makes these even more meaningful to you.
