In the hundreds of FE90 images I've seen so far, not one is focused further away that around 3 metres, and most are measured in centimetres or closer. My assumption is - in the eyes of its users so far - for them it is a macro lens, pure and simple.
The drawing style of all other subjects remain a mystery, but sooner or later someone will explore focus fade character and micro-contrast for more general photography by doing an aperture series from f2.8 to f11 for various real world, non-bug/flower/pet subjects. At say 10m-20m and infinity. People and landscapes too maybe. Sony are promoting the lens as suitable for these subjects too.

I have posted several albums of shots with this lens on my A7II in Google Plus, they are mixed with shots from my A7r & Sony Zeiss Distagon FE 35/1.4.
The lens certainly looks capable for other things besides macro. Thanks for sharing and welcome to the Fred Miranda forum!
Thanks very much! I've been lurking here for a while reading posts but haven't been posting myself except once before. Enjoying the very active threads on many topics. I'm looking forward to being more active here in the future!
I am curious to see a video demonstration of its AF speed. I've owned Canon 100L macro 2.8 and it is a lightning fast AF lens. It is also priced about the same, sometimes cheaper. With A7R2 in mind, perhaps 100L with its what looks like faster AF is a better choice?

At macro distance, I feel the Sony hunts back and forth more than the Canon 100mm L I had for three years. Of course, the body is part of the equation too. As I subsequently posted, the Sony's AF speed is decent beyond the macro range. I know macro lenses hunt at macro distance but to me the Sony seems to hunt more. You can get a very good used Canon 100 L for under $800.
You could see the AF hunting at macro distance here:
The Sony is a keeper. It feels balanced on the A7 too. Sorry, one more bug shot from today. How is the bokeh?

From a few weeks ago, a wilting sunflower, and 100% crop from Sony A7. Don't have the exposure info close at hand, but I believe this was at 1/250, f/2.8, ISO 200.
