Congratulations to nextelbuddy for winning Feature Thread of the Week with 11 votes - View Previous Winners

This is the final session from a Grow with me package the client purchased. I love watching them go from a bump in the belly to full on toddlers. you get to learn them, grow with them and its so cool.

lots of personality in this little guy. these were my top picks and favorites from the session.

I'm sure the relationship is more important and long-lasting that these wonderful photos. Great job.
You have SO many great photos on Flickr that I would love to call my own.

Awesome set! #1 & #4 impressed me the most. The others were not far behind.

As a small nit: I think taking a bit off the bottom of #1 would reduce the attention on the OOF grass.

it certainly is, that is how I choose my clients to work with. The relationship has to be important between us and I love seeing their connection between each other.

Thanks Jim! I can understand where you are coming from on the OOF area.. that's just something i like in my style and do it on purpose. I love enhancing the selective DOF feel on these types of images.

I like how you captured different aspects of his personality: the sense of wonder in the first shot, holding onto Dad in the second shot, playing and joy in 3 and 5, and then bringing in the parents while still featuring the boy in 6. And you utilized great light direction the whole time. Great job!

I'm glad you picked up on that with Kids i really try to do this and I hope that im getting better at it. I politely discourage parents from telling their kids what to do and i like to interact with them and give them 10-15 min to warm up to me. i play with them, run with them, play hide and go seek peek a boo etc.. what ever it takes to show them im all about having fun. What ever they throw at me I run with it and make the best of it. if they run I run.....

still trying to figure out with all the running why i'm not losing any weight

Thanks for the comments!

Some of the most amazing photos of a kid I have seen recently. These are the photos that I would like to look at for inspiration.
Sorry for a random question, but would you mind telling me usually how much time do you give for a session like this? I mean, you have known this particular kid for a long time so I am sure the chemistry is already there; but for example if there's a kid that you are meeting for the first time..

Thank you! honestly at these ages, they really dont remember me or know who I am lol. I photograph them at newborn, 6 month, 12 month and 18 month cycles and i'm always stranger danger.

I make my sessions 1.5 hours for this reason. 15-30 min of warm up pictures and getting to know the kids. I dont even photograph them at first. I play with them, run around and ACT like a kid and have fun. (yea its goofy and silly and people at parks im sure look at me like im weird but I dont care lol. its what ever and i not photographing them and they aren't paying me) get them interested in me and their surroundings. I have my camera with me in the other hand so when their switch FLIPS ON, then i'm ready to grab something... anything and go from there.

It also really depends on the parents too. I let the parents know to just relax, have fun and let the kid do what they want to do. Its their time to have fun and shine and NOT be told they cant go here or there or whatever. most of the time that works fine but every now and then you get a few uptight parents that say they will oblige but still just keep doing their own thing and you just do the best you can do.

I do the same for a kid i'm meeting the first time or one I have photographed several times. Its a good way to just let them know that i'm fun and cool.

These are absolutely lovely!

Can you share what lens was used for that beautiful razor thin DOF on #1? It reminds me of Lisa's photos (also always lovely) and she uses a 200mm f/2 IS. Is that what this is?

#2 is THE BEST. I like how the father's arm frames the boy at the same time giving depth and leading lines going straight back at him all while the expression AND eyes grabs my attention.

Awesome shots!

Very nice pictures. The 58g rendering is truly special. Of course, it is the photographer that makes the magic happen with the right tools
