p.1 #1 · Never ask a photo enthusiasts for a family photo
My daughters daycare asked us to bring in a family photo for a project they were doing. Honestly, with work and a 9 month old, I just didn't have the time nor energy to do family portraits. So I decided to cheat. I took a photo of me sitting I the couch one day, few days later took some of the wife when the baby was napping. Few days later took some of the baby. Picked the best photo of each of us and did a composite. It's not perfect, I got lazy on the layer masks. In the end it turned out okay though, met the needed requirements. Daycare liked it, most families brought in printed cell photos or more traditional portraits.

Total time, no. It didn't take less time. The advantage however with shooting each person separately was I didn't need all 3 of us "just right" at the same time to have usable photo. Plus, when we put my daughter down my wife could then get the baby's attention.

- some things just ok is good enough.
Very fun pic! I will say I prefer #1 over #2.
Did you try the photo of you in #2 in the #1 shot?
I think the expressions between you and your kid would be perfect.

So this took less time than a family portrait?
Oh geez... of course not. Don't be a kill joy. This is a photography site and this sort of long way around and playin wiff stuff is exactly why God, Nikon and Adobe love us (I can't speak to Canon).
Beautiful family. Fun shots. Very credible composites, Sapper. You're FM Dad of the Day.

Love it! I wouldn't have pegged this as a composite if you hadn't mentioned. I also find it inspiring to try something similar, as trying to get multiple people to do the right thing in the same shot is often futile.
