With some of the threads recently being posted regarding maximizing ones photographic quality from monopods, tripods, long lens techniques, hand-held, core strengthening and post production skills, I thought I'd add one more, weeks months and years of photographing a subject.

If all things are equal, then the last may be the most important.

I am posting a collection of cardinals, 20-images taken over the last 9-years.

16-20. #17, 18 and 20, 7+years of this unique Cardinal. The funky feather makes him unique and always identifiable.

Thanks

You go Uncle Tedster ! A fine collaboration of your favorite feeder bird my friend. Now for some comments. #1 is a great shot and pose, I might remove the subtle reflected light circles top left and bottom right. #2 could use some highlights toned down bottom left. #4 is a nice pose and image, I might run some NR on the bgd. #5 has lots of details, but the specular highlights on the upper beak could use toning down as well as removing or doing the same to that bright white object by her feet. #6-8 are nice poses with clean bgds. #9 maybe tone down upper beak, boost midtones lower shaded half of the bird or reduce contrast. #10 doesn't have the beak highlights like 9, so I prefer that one of these two similar shots. #12 is my pick of the next five. #16,17 and 19 are also my picks.
#20 I would lose the misplaced feather off of his back, otherwise I would have picked that one too. Great history on your cards buddy.

I'm glad Herb took the time to offer some critique, so I could just sit back and enjoy all these great Cardinal images Such a great variety of environments and plumages on these birds. For some reason I liked the look of the one in 9 and 10, not sure why as it looks a little wet and messy but I like it
I agree that experience with your subject is very important to getting really good shots.

Great suggestions my friend. I made a few of the changes you suggested but not on #20. That feather is what makes him unique.

Absolutely superb series of these beautiful birds, Ted! We don't have Cardinals here in Oz and it is a pleasure to see them and shown so nicely!

Yes keep working the subject and if takes years so be it. 18 and 20 are my picks from this set of determination and skill Ted.

Very well done Ted. Lots of good stuff, but 12 stands out for me. 7, 8 , 16, and 17 are also "noteworthy" ~ Ron

Well, I was going to list my favorites, but the list got too long! What a fantastic set - like you say, years and years of working a subject / species can really pay off.
