p.1 #1 · AF performance of the Touit 32mm after FW update?

Hi guys, for those who have managed to get their Touits updated with the PDAF support - how much difference do you see in the AF? I am deciding between the Sony 35mm 1.8 vs Touit 32mm 1.8 for my A6000, and the AF speed is one of the important considerations in the decision.

Any thoughts on this? With the new rebate I'm thinking about getting the Touit.

I was getting ready to sell the 32 before they announced the update, and after the update, i am keeping the lens. It is very good now, and i am probably seeing things, but it seems a little sharper as well.

Thanks for the feedback! Have you by any chance used the Sony 35mm 1.8 as well? Interested in knowing how the updated 32mm touit compares to the Sony 35mm in terms of AF.

I was going to replace the Touit with the Sony version, but really like the Touit now.
So i did not get a chance to compare the two.

Anyone else have a preference between the two?

I have both. The updated firmware allows the Touit 32 to use all the PDAF AF points and before the firmware upgrade it only used the AF points in the central zone. IMHO, with the firmware upgrade the Touit has acceptable AF performance on the A6000, before the upgrade it did not. I think the 35/1.8 focuses faster and quieter though.

As far as my preferences between the lenses, the 35/1.8 OSS is clearly better if you're going to do any video. For stills, I prefer the Touit 32 for architecture and landscapes as it has a little higher contrast and is a little sharper across the frame. I prefer the 35/1.8 OSS for people shots with slightly less contrast and smoother bokeh, but the Touit is sharp enough stopped down for landscapes.

Here's one with the Touit:

and two with the 35/1.8 OSS:

It was much easier to decide when one was several hundred dollars more

Thanks Jeff for the comparison. For stills I am fine with the AF being slightly slower as long as it does not start hunting. My current Sigma 30mm is decently fast on A6000 in good light but in lower light levels its starts to at times hunt for focus. I am not talking about really dark conditions but lets say indoors in a living room lit with a couple of floor lamps. Do you see the same with the tout and/or the Sony?

Video AF is also am important consideration and from your post, it looks like Sony is the one to use for that.

I prefer the wider FL of the touit as my preferred "normal lens" range is 40-45mm equivalent. But AF has to be up to the mark as well. Also waiting to see more about the FE 28mm f2.

I really like both lenses and you really can't go wrong. To me, the deciding factors would be:

1. any video usage - get the 35 OSS
2. Mostly landscape and architectural - get the Touit 32
3. Mostly people shots - get the 35 OSS
4. If you care about OSS - get the 35 OSS
5. If you want the lens that is slightly more compact - get the 35 OSS

I don't have a problem with either lens in decent indoor lighting when shot wide open at F1.8, but when it gets slightly darker I switch to MF. I don't think I'd chose one lens over the other based on low light focus, but I haven't done any controlled experiments.

I can't remember where I read it, but it's supposed to be for a while, June if I recall correctly, but I remember the last time they were on sale as a package they cut the sale short very quickly, but I'm sure at that point it was to move stock, now I figure most who would be in the market for it already have it. I'd love if they were selling it cheaply to replace with one with a quieter AF motor.

Granted I've never tried one myself and I've put it in my cart and removed it twice over the past few days. Every part of me tells me to get the 35, it's quieter, it's cheaper, and it has OSS. I don't take a lot of video, but I could see myself taking more clips of my kids, so the 35 would be better. Yet I'm not completely sold and part of me actually is considering getting both and doing my own individual shoutout to see which is the winner.

Here's a question for you (I've been lurking): is a sharp shot that's not focused as intended, still sharp?

Anyone know if touits sold now come with the new firmware? Thinking of getting one for my wife but here in oz it would pe a real pain to send it in for firmware upgrading.

I think an email to Zeiss directly and see if they have some serial number cutoff, to tell if its been done or not.

I purchased the Touit 32mm used from KEH (for just slightly less than the current reduction, and also ducked NYC sales tax) about 6 weeks ago. I used the original firmware for about a week before I sent it up to Zeiss and the upgrade is a definite improvement. The original firmware had to hunt for everything in AF-C mode, and in AF-A it was not impressively accurate and if I purchased the lens for even $500 a year ago the autofocus performance would be a major bummer.

The update resolved all of this and it's a very satisfying lens to shoot with. I do photograph people with it and am very happy with the result. I have the Sony 50mm OSS and I find the autofocus to be comparable in speed and accuracy, if (as everyone has mentioned) louder. OSS is nice but I don't find I miss it terribly on the Touit. If I'm shooting video that requires audio, the 50mm is my choice (so if this is a major application for you, definitely check the 35mm). I have shot video with the Touit (manual focus, steady hands!) and it's alright, certainly looks good.

I do think there is a significant qualitative difference between the images from the Touit and the Sony 35, which is why for roughly the same cost I chose the Touit. Your mileage may vary and if video is a big driver behind your kit selection, I don't think the Sony 35 is a bad lens (I think it's a darn good one and wouldn't be upset if I had it).

Hey @billygomberg, do you happen to remember how long it took to get the lens back after firmware upgrade? I noticed that on long exposures my images would be half black from the middle-ish down. I haven't really been able to find many reports of this happening to other people but I think the firmware upgrade would probably help. I'm leaving 2/22 for New Zealand though so I only have 2 weeks. Would it get turned around in time?

posting in the forum (opto sent a PM as well) for anyone who is curious:

The firmware upgrade was turned around very quickly, but I did not have to ship it very far - from NYC to a little ways upstate - took less than a week.

I do not recall if the firmware update addressed anything besides the Touit's compatibility with the a6000's multiple autofocus schemes. For this, the update is a necessity, the autofocus is super fast and accurate. I do not know if this will address the issue you are having with long exposures, it may be worth checking with Zeiss.
