Thats awesome, I want to get the 500mm but I only have the LA-EA3 with my A7 II, will the LA-EA3 work with the Sony/Minolta AF 500/8 lens?
I believe that LA-EA3 will give you basically everything that the LA-EA4 does, including the IBIS, except for the autofocus. The LA-EA4 has that SLT mirror that enables you to get the phase detection AF similar to that of the SLT (almost DSLR look alike) Sony Alpha cameras, such as the A99 and A77, etc. Frankly, at least in my case, I would rely on the AF to get more keepers of the fast action pace of birds in flight situation. I set the AF on the "Lock On: Flexible Spot" mode and just make sure that the target is locked on within the green double lined area and it should be in focus.
On the other hand, sebboh (Derek) managed to get BIF using a completely manual focus lens . So, as you can see, not that you cannot take good and in focus birds in flight pictures but in my opinion, the AF and IBIS, are the two factors that make your life easier in doing so for more keepers.
I have both the 3 and 4 adapters. Using the Tamron 150-600 lens the adapter 4 focus is much faster and has AF adjust available. With the adapter 3 and that lens the AF is very slow andno AF adjust is vailable. With the adapter 3 more AF choices are available, where as the adapter 4 just has wide, center and flex spot. This afternoon i took the adapter 3 to Tempe Camera and tried it with their pre-owned 70-400G lens, the AF was very slow and poor.
