You can travel with the 16-35 and cover up to 52mm.

With crop mode and clear image zoom you can get 3x the focal length.

I wrote about how good the crop mode is in my A7II review. With lenses designed for denser sensors, the 10 MP crop is really high quality.

Contax G 90 in crop mode:

I agree; the quality is excellent. I wouldn't hesitate to use the crop mode on my A7. Here's a shot with the Canon EFS 55-250mm.

For me, crop mode on my A7r is useless for stills (I can always crop better in post anyway), but for video, I actually do get more reach since the target resolution (1920x1080) is much less than the actual resolution, even in crop mode.

Crop mode on a7II would give me a chance to make my photo system more compact and universal. I get a camera with only one lens (FE 55/1.8) and the same time excellent short-tele FF equivalent about 85mm. With one more lens - 77mm - I get medium-tele FF equivalent 120mm (115mm to be exact) which I got used to during long time exploitation of 77mm on APS-C Pentax camera (and which I adore). 10Mp is enough for me, especially for portraits or close-upped fragments for what I actually need these two virtual lens - 85 or 120mm. For long shot pictures you will have 24Mp to look closely at the details or pixel pip. Those guys who prefer street photo style diapason about 28-35-50mm will get it with only one lens like Sonnar 35/2.8 or Sony 28/2.

I used it one time, and the resolution drop in the EVF and LCD was crazy. It's kind of hard to describe, but basically it's just artificially enlarging the APS-C size of the sensor readout and blowing it up to fill up the full screen, so it's a lot more pixelated. I wouldn't use it for anything serious really, at that point might as well get a good APS-C body. I can't personally see the utility in buying a bigger full frame camera and using a tiny portion of the sensor. I'd rather use my Nex 5 just because of size and the LCD resolution being technically better.

APS-C glass is smaller and lighter.

Second the SEL 16-70/4 which gives an 18mp 24-105 equivalent on the A7R II from a very small lens. Magic!

Or we could hope Sony introduces a decent FE 24-105 f4 lens, or even just a decent FE 24-70 f4 that didn't cost $1k+ and have soft corners!
