p.1 #1 · Does a 45-50mm EFOV fixed lens largish sensor compact camera exist?

Happy New Year, friends.

I bought a Coolpix A with the optical finder when that super special was on (and I notice that the price of the camera alone is back up to $469 today on B&H's site), and I have been using a Fuji 100s pretty much exclusively for the last six months while on the road, but I am back now, and an old need/want is reasserting itself: I want a compact camera with a form factor like either of these camera, but with a 45-50mm EFOV.

Reason? It's a different perspective than 35 and suits head and shoulders portraits perfectly (for me); and I want to be able to pick any one of these FLs up when I leave the house. Remember the old days? Every SLR came with a fast fifty, and I want to have that again, or the closest thing to it. Re. 35: I know I can crop, but would much rather not—and I like seeing and composing in the finder, so a 50 is what I want.

I suppose that, eventually, I will get into the Sony system, but apart from the A7s (which is too expensive compared to the other models, IMHO), but I will wait for an A7 equivalent that has a silent shutter; this is the feature I most love about the X100s.

Any suggestions?

Well the two options that occur to me are the TCL adaptor for the x100 series (I have one on order) or an XE-2 with the 35mm (50-e) which is scarcely bigger.

Ian, please let me know what you think of the ergonomics of the camera plus adapter; a number of friends mentioned that it changed the handling completely. Still, it is an option. I had an X-E1 (and 2) and the 35 is a lovely lens, but for me it is just too big (I know this is such a personal thing) compared to the 100s, which has really spoiled me.

Thanks for reminding me about the TCL, too; I await your feedback once you have used it.

The Sigma DP-2 is 45mm equivalent and is a similar form factor as the Fuji 100. Great image quality but very slow to use, a battery hog, low ISO only (usable) and not very ergonomic...but great IQ.

Rgr that - probably won't get here for a month.

BTW if you shoot square format the x100s lens (without converters) acts like a standard 80mm on 6x6. I really like that format too.

Do you really have to have a fixed lens, and is a 1" sensor large enough? How about the RX100 III. Large sensor (for compact cam), moderate zoom, small, popup EVF, IS, fast lens.

Another option might be one of the small m4/3 bodies and a fast 25mm lens.

The IQ of the DP2M makes using the camera completely worth the effort. Sure having ISO6400 is nice, but it requires *NO* skill from the user. None. Limit yourself to ISO200 or 400 and all of a sudden, you have to actually use effort to get many shots.

But in daily light, the DP2M is effortless and stomps anything short of a Nikon D800 series camera.

It doesn't even have a viewfinder. And there's a lot more to skill than iso!

Of course it doesn't. Many cameras don't have viewfinders. You can add one via the hot shoe if your skills require such a thing.

You mentioned ISO first.

@ ratty: the limitations of that otherwise magnificent camera are two, for me: no viewfinder and SPP as part of the workflow. The lens-sensor combination, together with the virtually silent shutter, is a winner. I used to own one, but the X100s's finders have spoiled me; I use the optical finder 90% of the time.

Mike, that is another possibility, and that camera (now that it has a pop-up finder) is more attractive, I will say. But our dollar is weak against yours right now, and that price point mean that ordering one trips the $1,000 AUD Customs threshold... and in addition to massive delays and phone calls and faxes to take delivery of it, tripping the threshold adds GST, Customs charges, AQUIS charges, etc., etc.; all in all, an extra 30%. Used, though, definite possibility.

Kit, I can understand the want/need for a viewfinder. I've had a Fuji X100 since they were first available and that viewfinder has spoiled me for life. Further SPP can be a real drag as well. It took me a good 6 months to come to terms with the Sigma. This camera is only worth the effort if you really really desire maximum IQ or enjoy a good challenge. I like both of those so slowly the DP2M became my main camera whenever I shoot digital, which is not all that often really to be honest.

The IQ difference between my DP2M and X100 could *NOT* be more stark. A full sized image from the DP2M is just amazing to stare into.

Ian, thanks for the 'shoot square format' recommendation; I have used that in the past, and will try it again. And I do like that format, too.

Mike, do any of the really small µ4/3rds bodies have a finder; I have a number of lenses already for this format (we do all our videos on µ4/3rds). I have been out of the loop for a while...

I only have the OMD kit (too large I think), but I know the GX7 does, that snazzy tilting one (which I'm rather envious of). Combine that with a 25/1.8 maybe? Or there is a 25mm Pany/Leica or 30mm Sigma

How about the new Panasonic LX100: 4/3 sensor and useful zoom range. Looks like a rad camera to me.

Hi Kit,

I've had a TCL-X100 (50mm equiv) for my X100S for a few months. I haven't used it much, but I can say this; it has good IQ, and it makes the camera very nose heavy. The X100/X100S is one of the few modern cameras I own that feels comfortable on an around-the-neck strap. The rest of them hang off a shoulder (I sometimes use one DSLR on each shoulder and the X100S around my neck).

Just today, I ordered a WCL-X100 (28mm equiv) - free shipping ends today.

The TCL aux lens really changes the handling of the X100S. It no longer hangs flat against your body, it takes a definite nose-down attitude. Also, the forward C of G makes it feel different in your hands. OTOH, I think it does provide a usefully longer focal length with better IQ than you'd get from cropping the 'vanilla' X100S image. Of course, the WCL is the only gamne in town if you want wider (I tried the Nikon WC-E68 that was popular when the X100 was new, but I was underwhelmed).

I bought the TCL and WCL aux lenses for a special application, where I use the X100S for taking photos during especially noise-sensitive parts of Zen ceremonies. For most of the time in this situation, I use my 6D ('silent') cameras with L-zooms.

I do use the X100S as a walkabout and 'street' camera, but I'd rather take my XE-2 with 18-55 OIS for general situations, than use the X100S with both aux lenses.

ratty, I know how good those images are, and 45mm EFOV is my all-time favourite FL. I will think on this, thanks.
