These are fantastic, Jim! What a terrific trip, and what amazing diversity (the Hoatzin and Horned Screamers get my vote for most striking ectodermal derivatives).
Like Tam, I'm also struck by the youthful appearance of the guy holding the big lens; I'm also struck by the attire of the photographers (long sleeves, long pants); I guess July in Peru must be delightful.
Geez Jim, I'm sorry I'm so late to the party, but I'm here now
I really must say wow!! What a set It really is difficult to put into words how much I enjoyed scrolling through these, and I did scroll through many times. I'm standing here at my desk on a Monday morning just smiling happy looking at these. Splendid work and what a trip that must have been
Fantastic photos, Jim.
I went collecting fishes in Rio Madre de Dios and in Rio Tambopata this past January.
Our base was Puerto Maldonado. It was an amazing experience. I am sure your 13 year old had a lifetime experience there.

That looks like a fantastic trip Jim, especially with your son along! Oh, and great photos!

Thank you very much, Tracey. The trip is really what it's all about, right? The photos are simply the icing on the cake.

Great photos. I'm picking #8 and 10.
Nice to compare some similar birds with the Pantanal of Brazil. Your capped heron is also wonderful.
That's a trip I would also like to do some day!
Don
Thank you for the picks, Don. I noticed some of the similarities from your terrific Brazil posts. Sadly, the only jaguar we saw was in the dark at 5:00 AM, so I'm gonna need to go back to one of those spots if I want an image.

Hi Greg - Thanks for the kind words, much appreciated!
This is the first time anyone's used the phrase ectodermal derivatives in one of my posts. Is that how they talk at Stanford? I'm guessing that means the horns and crowns, eh? I'm with you on that.
The faux youthfulness must have been due to the excitement of the trip - my appearance aged rapidly once I get back to the office.
Weather was highly variable...cool mornings/evenings in the cloud forest / warming dramatically during day, early morning chill following night rains the morning we embarked on the river trip to the jungle, then hot in the jungle. The long sleeves and pants were as much for bugs as weather.

PS WOW again
Thanks Tim! Standing desk, eh? Been thinking about getting one of those. I really appreciate your kind and generous comments and am very glad you enjoyed the set. This trip was the best I've been on in terms of variety of subjects and decent photographic opportunities. Highly recommended. This set was mostly just from day 4 of the trip, the first few days were covered in earlier posts. Still working though days 5-8 shots.

Very cool! Our trip terminated in PM. Our guide spoke of the increasing pollution in the river, especially mercury due to mining operations. I hope you found plenty of healthy specimens.
