I'm going to stick with these to the end of the season and if the new firmware does not come with real fixes before the start of next season I've got to do something else. I may go back to using the Strato II but that requires an on-camera TX with two more AA batteries on board.

Agree.......you can't hold on forever.
The rate things are changing there may well be some better options by then.
Who knows they may even bring out an Odin TCU with pass through top hotshoe,
BUT BETTER STILL PHOTTIX!.............WOULD BE A FIRMWARE FIX FOR CHRISTMAS............!!

I got a notification from Phottix tonight that there is new notified for Nikon Mitros and Mitros + units: http://journal.phottix.com/photo-accessory-news/mitros-mitros-firmware-nikon/

Hope this solves my problems.

Good Luck ...I hope so too.

MINE JUST THIS MINUTE Stopped firing full stop. Won't test fire , wont fire in any mode but TX functionality still works. Swapped batteries let it alone for 15 minutes , fired once then nothing again

Will attempt to go back to prior firmware but this is starting to get ridiculous!!%$#@!

After rolling back firmware...NO CHANGE........TX works...pressing test button when in TX causes unit to beep normally but then NO LIGHT EMISSIONS......

RETURNING TO STORE TOMORROW....hoping its a one off problem as trying to stay positive about the Mitros+ but it is becoming increasingly difficult

A similar thing happened to one of my Canon Mitros+ guns as well. I had to leave it overnight before it would fire again. I returned both of mine as you know.

I'm quite accustomed to flashguns breaking - probably all of my Canon ones have been in for service over the years, some several times. Its the nature of the beast. Some faults have been simple like a shoe breaking off - which you can replace yourself - or the socket into which you plug a battery pack disappearing into the body - more fiddly but doable and then superglue it into place :- ) Other repairs have been for burned out heads and a board. Heads are a very tricky DIY job involving careful dismantling and soldering so best to send in for repair e.g. for a 550EX:

http://nikkiwaterlow.wordpress.com/2010/09/20/maintenance-replacing-bulb-in-550ex-flashgun/

The upshot is that at least with Canon gear you know you can get it fixed and quickly with CPS membership. And lots of info online. Dunno what the Phottix turnaround time or charges would be.

There always seems to be some compromise though no matter what gear you buy. What about these reports of the Canon 600EX being limited in some master / slave scenarios:

Thanks Pete,

I can understand that these things break, particularly with heavy use, but seriously this unit has done very little in relative terms. Have never had an issue with my 430 or 580's given the way I shoot but......who knows maybe this Mitros+ just a DUD.

BTW it did not "revive" overnight....but I did get a couple of pops out of it. Seems like the capacitor might be shot, as I have re-enabled the 'beeps" and all else seems to be working such as zoom motors, switches, TTL signalling etc etc?

We'll see when I take it back today!

My connection at Phottix says that the new Nikon firmware update is supposed to fix the misfiring antics too. We will see. I have to wait until I go home tonight to get on a Windows machine to see if I can get the installer to work. The Mac version does not work under Mavericks or Yosemite (so why even post it?).

The latest update (11/5/2014) has not made any changes in my two flashes.

The one that was firing intermittently is still doing that. This morning I put that flash on a D4and the first two shutters clicks the flash did not fire, then it fired twice, missed again fired twice more then missed three times in a row.

The other flash fired three times and then missed then fired again. It is also under exposing by one full stop in iTTL mode.

These are shots with roughly a half sec between each shutter click, so they are in close succession to each other but not machine gunning it either. My SB900s have no problem keeping up with this type of shooting.

Mark...not good!

I am trying to stay positive as when I took mine back to the store yesterday, they kept it for a complete inspection by a technician. I will find out more early next week but the guy I spoke to seemed genuinely puzzled and this store has sold quite a few. I hope I just got a DUD unit. It was one of the earlier ones as your s were.

Given the behaviour of yours maybe you have one as well. I mean it is behaving really differently to most other reports of the Nikon variety ?....the others just seem to blow out or fail completely.? I'd take it back to the store or send to omegabrands if I were you, particularly now its off season.

I bought mine directly from Phottix China and given how difficult it is to communicate with them I would probably cause me to have a cardiac.

Hey....you're a Pro Photographer ...Yes?.... with a voice...Yes?

and one who has embraced Phottix by buying the Stratos, Odins and Mitros+...Yes?

They have appointed agents in US...yes?

Agents are supposed to represent the Principal....good bits and bad bits!

The Product has a 2 Year Warranty ....Yes?

Send it back to Omega Brands or contact "My Contact" directly to get some satisfaction....don't bother with the customer support channel as we both know that does not function!

Yeah, I have a Phottix FB contact and I'm waiting on him to update his to see what he is getting.

Who or what is Omega Brands?

Remember you gave me your FB contact for support at Phottixs US FB Site. Well I did that and then then got contacted by Steve Peer at Phottix who had been notified of my issue by OmegaBrands in the US, who obviously run the Phottix FB USA Page.

Omega Brands are Phottix's US Agents, as well as agents/distributers of a number of photo brands and now owners of GigaPan. They are registered in Marylands.

Maybe worth a call first up?

PS I just noticed its Omega Brandess not just " Omega Brands"

UPDATE

Picked up my replacement unit today and happy to find it had 1.06 firmware pre-loaded indicating a "more recent" build than my previous unit ( 1.04).

Initial tests indicate performance identical to old unit prior to it mysteriously "stop" firing. When triggered in RX mode or when mounted on an Odin RX , and set in Manual mode on the Transmitter it has no variation between1/1 power and 1/2 power and its lower power settings are thereafter 1 stop "too hot" ( ie 1/4 =1/2 etc). Full stop range across the range is ~ 5.5 stops instead of 7. ( see prior test data)

Technicians could not find anything "physically wrong" with older unit ( ie blown capacitor/globe etc) but could also not get it to fire. They have sent back to Phottix for diagnosis. In speaking with the store owner he indicated this was the first Canon unit they have had returned out of approximately 40 Canon variants sold, but noted the Nikon variant had multiple complaints early on.

Early days but I can't fault with the Warranty stance of Phottix or the Store in this instance. No fuss, just a simple check and test then replace.
Hopefully the original was just a bad copy....time and testing will tell.

Since I bought mine on-line from China I may have to send mine back there for testing. This whole thing is such a joke.
