I made a last ditch trip to Eastern Washington last week to see if any of the burrowing owl chicks were still around and try to get some last minute shots of from my bluebird location. Unfortunately most of the bluebird boxes were empty because someone had removed the nests from the nest boxes. When I arrived at the owl burrow, I was surprised to see that there were still six chicks, although all of them could fly, they would not go more that a few yards away from the burrow. I brought an old fence post with me from the bluebird location and when they got scared into the hole by a hawk, I decided to put the post near their burrow. This proved to be a great move since first the mom loved sitting on the stick and when she would leave, the chicks would fight over who could be on the top. They were even trying to climb to the top using their talons. Some of them started playing like fox's jumping on top of each other and sometimes one would lay down on it's back letting the others jump on it. This proved to be one of the most interesting and rewarding wildlife shoots I have had the privilege to see. Light was poor in fact it was raining part of the time, but still enough to keep shutter speed up. I hope you enjoy seeing these as much as I did during this great shoot. Bruce
