This photo is a result of my most recent trip to Patagonia that took place in March and April, 2014. I took this photo on my last day in the area of Torres del Paine/Salto Grande. I haven't seen any photos taken from this view point, thus far. It showcases entire range of Torres del Paine and famous Salto Grande. I hiked to this remote area and spent couple nights waiting for the light. And the light came. During these days when I was chasing the light I experienced all types of weather that Patagonia has to offer: all types of rain and snow, entire spectrum of clouds, and the wind trying to destroy my tent. This is a night photo taken with full moon illuminating the landscape. In order to control perspective and cover wide angle, I blended by hand four images. Enjoy!

Very dramatic indeed. Taking long exposures with the light of the moon make for some interesting effects. Nicely done.

Wow! Other worldly indeed. I am glad it is ours though, and how beautiful she is.

Very nice. Marc Adamus recently posted something he called "The other side" from a similar vantage point, slightly upstream from where you were, probably just a couple of hundred feet. I like both compositions, each for different reasons.

Thanks everyone. Thanks GroovyGeek, I know Marc's photo and I have seen it before I went to Patagonia but when I got there I was trying my own new compositions. I also took some photos with composition similar to his. This is totally different composition and lighting. There is more to come

Hi,

I would have sooner seen a more natural rendering of this image with the composition that you captured as I don't feel that it needed much else. The long exposure clouds add nothing to this but confusion and just add an element that is just not needed. A single take would have been perfect in my eyes to freeze the clouds and work them with the composition that you have.

My 2 cents.

Thanks Nigel. I'm not sure what do you mean by "more natural rendering" in case of this photo. In my opinion this is as close to natural as I can remember. This is a 25 seconds exposure with very minimal clouds movement and this looks very very close to the raw file and the scene that I saw that night.

Excellent image Artur! Patagonia seems such an interesting and wild place for photography.

As far as GroovyGeek's thoughtless posting of a link to another photography board and another person's photograph because he "likes it"... well it's not only against our Landscape forum's guidelines to link to external sites, but also inconsiderate and detracts from ArturS and his presentation. If that other photographer wanted to post here, they would have.

I really like the composition, and how the clouds mimic the shape of the waterfall. I wouldn't mind seeing this with a cooler WB though. I think it would help give the better feeling of a night shot. At first glance, it looks like an underexposed long exposure daytime shot because of the warm color to the clouds --- even though that is in fact what the RAW file will look like. Since our color perception is weak at night, and things tend toward blue, I think a cooler WB would make this jump out as a night shot, and perhaps greater convey the feeling of standing there.

Just for kicks, I took your photoshop and did the following Color Balance Adjustment
Midtone: -13, +18, +47
Highlights: -11, 0, +17
Shadows: 0, 0, 0

It renders the scene very naturally, and gives the cool feeling of night. Also, the sky takes on a wonderful blue tone.

I agree Ben. I think Art was trying to get his grass little more yellow. Am I right?
Anyway, I think little WB adjustment (and maybe contrast too as the shot looks to me little HDR like) and this is a kick butt shot. Congrats Art.

What a spectacular image! The streaking clouds and the silky water compliment each other so nicely. Congratulations on taking the long hike and really combining the moonlight and the landscape so powerfully.

Wow, I've been planning a full moon shot for a little while now and am so glad I saw this to for motivation to get organised.
Thanks

Thanks again. Thanks Ben and Gregg, I was trying different WB adjustments for this photo. I decided to keep the WB (at least for now) so the photo looks as close as possible to the scene I saw as. I know that normally night scenes are a lot more cooler but I clearly remember how warm and bright it was that night. I was able to walk around without the headlamp and colours in the grass, rocks and mountains was very close to the day time. Anyway, I get your point and thank you very much for your input.

What a wild sky! . . . an amazing amount of orthographic activity for 25 seconds! Its a beautiful capture that I expect will have additional versions of processing. . . all good in their own way.

I've been up with a full moon and have seen the warm light you are talking about. The night == blue thing is in part cultural, as movies tend to showcase night scenes as having blue tinted light. I recall moonlight is the same really in color as daylight as the reflection off the surface of the moon is pretty much neutral. You may find somewhere between where you have it now and where Ben suggested could be a good compromise.

At any rate it is a spectacular scene, well done!
