I generally like B/W but the hue separation of the first win for me. The point of focus is right where the two icicles touch the water. The cool of the icicles vs the warmth of the reflected OOF background moves the eye right there. In the B/W, that hue separation is gone. It still has a great tonality, but the focal point is diminished.
Man... usually I can choose between B&W or color on a shot, but in this case, they both really are sweet. The color brings some different aspects to it that isn't in the B&W, but then the starkness of the B&W has something the color doesn't have... I am going to vote that it's a tie and both of these shots will be worthy of the Featured Thread vote!!!!

Now that you say this Mark the colour is my pick. I completely agree with your observation. Thanks.
They both look great but the colour version draws more interest. Unique colouring.
Did you ever find a contact at Victoria Beach? I'm not sure what conditions you're looking for, but there was no ice break-up near Hecla on Tuesday when I was there. The lake looked pretty solid with some surface melting and snow cover. Open water around the causeway and marshy areas though.
Interesting, Scott.
Until the word icicle was mentioned, I didn't know what I was looking at.
That might be the perfect measure of an abstract- at least for me.
Now that I know what it is, I really like both- but favor the color because I see in colour ().

Thank you all very much! Colour seems to the be winner! Probably why I made it the first image.

Thank you Sandra. No luck. I guess no one in VB uses or knows anyone using FB . We were at Hecla last weekend and everything was frozen 'cept for the bridge on the causeway. A disappointing trip photo-wise but a good day none-the-less. Hoping to check out some water falls this weekend!
