p.27 #4 · Foveon Sensor Images Thread (Official?) | |
Anyone done a full spectrum conversion on their Merrill ? I was thinking of perhaps having my DP2m modded, as they are pretty cheap these days, and assume that I could put a hot mirror on for normal color images (as normal as the X3 gets at least lol) and then an IR filter for IR work.
Not sure exactly how well IR would show up though as the red layer is at the bottom, no hopefully not overly noisy, but then again, IR is best done in bright sun, so I'd be at ISO100 which is pretty clean.
I don't know if I could find a hot mirror the same as what Sigma has either, so might have to adjust color images a bit, but mainly I like to shoot monochrome anyways so not a huge issue.
I think it could be actually pretty cool (in theory) to be able to shoot a normal color image to convert to b/w and then while keeping the camera on a tripod, switch to the IR filter and shoot the scene again, in order to get the black sky, contrasty clouds, and then blend the two exposures together, for an monochrome/IR monochrome image.
I think the M would be a good camera to convert as well, since even if your using a single layer of the sensor, you still have 15meg resolution. This is opposed to a a bayer camera where if you convert a 16meg APS-C, and then are only exposing the red pixels, your giving up a fair amount of per pixel acuity.
Likely would be a bit of learning curve with how to expose and process images, but that is kind of the fun of these cameras (IMO)
The M is already a pretty special and unique tool, so if I had one that became full spectrum, I'd have even more unique creative options to do with it, and even further set it apart from my "normal" camera's.
I want to do this in part because I find I'm shooting the M less these days, because camera's like the A7 and RX1 can come pretty close to the fine detail, plus do a whole lot more.
The M used to be this massive IQ improvement over landscapes with my Xtrans Fuji's, as you would expect, but these days, stuff like my RX1 can come pretty close for detail, and have advantages in high ISO, DR etc.
I'd like to get the M back into a position where its doing something that none of my other gear can duplicate, and full spectrum seems like it could be just the ticket....
