Had a couple shoots recently with the DePaul University dance and cheerleading teams. Too many girls to move the lights around for artistic lighting during these shoots, but I plan to go back with just a couple cheerleaders and dancers so we can focus on artistic lighting.
But I still love it even with this lighting when the girls get all athletic for me. Just one shot for now.
Shot with four Einsteins. One camera left with 60-inch parabolic umbrella, one camera right with softbox, two in the back gridded on both sides for highlights.
Awesome shot, and the timing on that capture is great. I like the lighting too. I know that it is more difficult to get great lighting with a moving object. Were you using burst or single shot?
Superbly done ... amazingly lovely expression on her face. Great lighting. The Einsteins really work for this !!!!! Did you use the silver Para ??
Humm You really screwed up your timing .. you missed the peak action by 1/10,000 of a second and her heels are not perfectly horizontal ... you will have to re-shoot
Great shot. Always like it when the girl (or guy) can pull off the stunt they want photographed. I always say in sports/action photography, I can only shoot what you can do.
Awesome image. Can't believe you got that with a single shot! Girl is an amazing athlete to pull that off. She even has a beautiful smile right when the shutter was released!
Great capture. Lucky you getting to work with these amazing and photogenic athletes !

Thanks, Tony! You're funny. It kills me when they nail it, and I miss the peak.
Yeah, I got the Einsteins pretty much exactly for this kind of shoot. Love those things! Yep, used the silver parabolic. It's a great combo. I am doing a re-shoot next month with them, this time with just a couple dancers and cheerleaders so we can take our time and do some really cool edgy lighting. She does this same flip but looking to the side, the direction she's going, and I want to her with gridded side lighting on both sides of her. If it turns out anything like what I have in my mind, it will be amazing. Can't wait to do it.
@film_4ever, it's really about coordinating the timing of their movement with how long it takes for your shutter to act once you've depressed the shutter button. I'm usually pretty close every time, and then sometimes get it just right like this one. I'm often, repeatedly, telling them... "Um, One more time?" As for the smile, they actually have to focus on a number of different things, their toes pointing, where their hands are, and then smiling for the camera -- all while doing this pretty amazing flip. That's pretty crazy. In this shot, I love how her hair is just touching the floor.
Great capture. I'm sure the cheerleaders and dancers love being able to get photos like this. This isn't something they will get with a cellphone. (No matter what Nokia wants us to think.)
Thanks for sharing the setup as well.

Thanks, Greg. It was actually pretty interesting watching their reaction to the shots that I showed them on the back of my camera. Dancers I've shown have always liked the shots, obviously, but these cheerleaders were kind of blown away by the shots. Apparently, all they've ever had before were smart phones shots of themselves that can't freeze the action or get that kind of detail. Made it more fun to see them react like that.

This is probably (no, unquestionably) the best capture of an aerial I've ever seen. I don't even bother to try to get these any more. Nailed it!!
Ron, I guess you lay awake at times, just thinking about what your next project will be and how to accomplish your goals. On this one, YOU NAILED IT, good job

Yeah, it's kinda cool. And when you find people who are willing to do things that are sometimes outside the box (and they're really talented at whatever they do), man, there is no limit to what you can do. Some really cool ideas came out of this shoot, and I can't wait to try them out. We're getting together again sometime next month. Thanks!
