Shooting South Tufa at 12mm with a composition this good must have been incredibly difficult. Congrats on the stunning image!

Timmeh,
I had some great cloud formations that day and when that happens, I like to shoot wide. I remember this was my last shot before packing up. I really enjoy shooting at Mono Lake.
Take care,
Fred
There is a stunning amount of detail in a dramatic and interesting composition. The color reflecting off the tufa seems consistent with what's going on in the sky. You would know best about the accuracy. You've just become a living advertisement for the A7r, too!
An incredibly good image, Fred.
All the superlatives have been used- so I'll just add my kudos to the growing list.
On the matter of composition- I played around a bit by cropping in a fair amount off the left side, and a smaller amount off the bottom. To my eye it reduced the somewhat overwhelming presence of the close-up rocks, while leaving enough of them to balance the image and give it the needed depth. But most importantly, it placed more emphasis on the mid and distant part of the scene- where the meat of the photograph is.
Just $.02 worth (or less because of inflation ).

Wow! I have to say that I'm just not usually a big fan of photos of Mono Lake but this one is so different. Most of them (not all) tend to look similar for me and as an icon can be overdone.
I've never been there so I know that colors my opinion. After seeing this photo I'm ready to make the trip. Great image. Simply a fine realization of well-defined mood and atmosphere with great processing.
Craig,
It'a s great location and definitely worth your visit. Bring all your lenses as you can go from wide to telephoto in this location.
Best,
Fred

Awesome image! A beautiful composition and light
One question : how does the a7r play with EF lenses? The aperture is electronic so does the adapter couple the body to the lens to allow aperture control?
Canon EF lenses are electronic and the adapter (Metabones Mark III) allows us to control exposure in camera (aperture and shutter speed).
Aside from my FD lenses and the Samyang 14mm f/2.8 where aperture control in done in lens, all other EF lenses + Metabones adapter get camera electronic exposure control.
Wonderful image Fred. I like the drama this shot gives. Mono lake is so popularly photographed it's hard to come out with a unique looking image. I think you have done a great job here.
Nice image Fred. I like the perspective / proportion, leaning toward panoramic. I think you had just enough of each element, and the movement really adds to the overall feel. Great mood as well.
Though I don't fully understand the use of Tilt and Shift lenses Fred, I know a great image when I see one My gosh this one really grabs me, perspective, drama and intensity abound!

Thanks Charlie. I will try your suggestions.
I usually take my time to get the composition the way I want it, but there is always room for cropping in post especially in the case of stitching. (This is an effective 60MP file after stitching)
