p.6 #1 · Issue with the Sony Zeiss 55/1.8 FE or A7
As it turned out, while testing a loaner FE 55/1.8 in my comparison between the stock A7s and modded A7s, I noticed that the modded A7s has mushy left side and sharp right side while the stock A7s exhibits sharp left mushy right behavior. Is there any chance that these FE has an S curve field curvature as the whole lens was biased to one side during the assembly?

Another update: Received my replacement copy of the 55/1.8 and it's significantly worse than my first one! It's utterly abysmal at f/1.8 and doesn't sharpen up as it stops down, unlike my first copy that hit 'acceptable' at f/5.6 or so.
This is very disappointing and, of course, frustrating.

OUCH!
This is the first I've read of this focus plane/decentering/field curvature conundrum. I hate these sorts of hunt and peck issues that make it so hard for buyers of supposedly quality gear to figure out what isn't working.
I'm very suspicious of the Sony mount -- I have no idea about the sensor being aligned, but all reports seem to indicate a weak mount structure on the a7-series. Curious if the new a7II beefed this up or how the senson VR works with focus irregularities.
I'm happier that I chose to try this sensor in the Nikon D800e -- no issues with OEM or Alt lenses -- so far, anyway!
I hope you all get this resolved to your satisfaction.
After some more testing I'm afraid I am getting repeatable results like that image with that FE 35mm f/1.4 ZA. So, it's going back to the retailer. I am disappointed because otherwise it's quite an impressive lens.

Positive effect for you is that you shall get better boke on large distances. Good luck with the lens exchange process.

In the thread on POTN you said you're going for a refund now. Why don't you try a new copy first? You seemed to love this lens.

I have the weekend to think things through and make a decision. As of now I am leaning a more towards an exchange than I was yesterday. Even with a refund I can always give the lens another try later. I'll update my POTN post.

The A7II has the full metal mount, and as a camera, is more solidly constructed than any of the otherE mount bodies. It's a tank.

Okay guys.
I've just installed a full metal (1 solid piece) mount known as "Fotodiox Tough E-mount LT" which is a slightly wider version of the standard Tough E-mount that prevents light leak as well. I'm sorry to say that it didn't change the tilt behaviour of my 55/1.8.
After several attempts to compensate for lens skew by tilting the lens mount with custom washers I finally found a sweet spot. The offset applied to one side is equal to 3 tinfoil layers (somewhere in 3 x 0.015mm = 0.045mm) which is a ridiculously low number. What struck me the most were plastic stands that support the lens mount! How can you expect consistent quality when the key barrel component that is under stress all the time is made of plastic?
I'm so sick of Sony QC issues and at the same time I'm so excited about the new Zeiss Batis lineup! I'm gonna buy 25/2.0 and 85/1.8 if they prove to be as consistent as other "real" Zeiss lenses to somewhat replace my 55/1.8 and 35/2.8 combo. I also decided against FE 35/1.4 due to field curvature, price and similar QC issues. I'm gonna miss a lens in-between 25mm and 85mm, but neither 55/1.8 nor 35/1.4 is suitable

Si bros i was looking forward to this... a7 + 1.8/55 combo....or the 50 c sonnar.
Which one of these really causing the whole tilted/right side sharpness.?
1. Sensor itself not parallel to mount
2. The sensor cover
3. The camera mount
4. The lens mount
5. The lens
6. It’s by design for all a7 series and 1.8/55 theres no correction for this
I noticed that canon settled with 18mm mount flange ( on their mirrorless) same as Sony, if canon releases their first mirrorless fullframe with the same 18 mm mount there will be no way for me to mount this zeiss-sony 1.8/55 to a canon, there’s no room for the adapter to fill in the gap.
Unless Canon decided to go shorter say 15mm ... this way even fuji cropped lens like 56mm f1.2 will do.
