Really glad you won the TOTW Mark - because otherwise I'd have missed this valuable information. Love the Pelican !
It's slightly different to the way I shoot BIF (M mode, set the S/S and aperture I want and use Auto-ISO for the correct exposure. Centre point and 21 AF points. Tracking set to 1. Gimbal on a Monopod) so I'll have to give your (and Tim's) methods a try.

Best to you and keep us in images please!

Thanks a lot Karl. I love taking flight shots of anything. 2013 wasn't real active on the forum for me, but I hope to be more involved in 2014. You and the other core members sure make this a great place to come and hang out.

Hi Kevin,
Thanks for your comment and I'm glad you found it interesting. You have developed a method of shooting with the auto iso function that works well for you. You may or may not have better results with my method, but this thread's intent was to get input from shooters like you. I checked out your site and you have a lot of very nice shots there.
Congratulations, Mark! A very informative post, well presented and with great pics to support it.
The 400 f5.6L is my favorite lens for IF shooting, paired with a 7D usually or the MkIV some other times. Almost the same settings you described but I play a bit more with the ISO, especially with the MkIV.
Well done

I'm glad to see you're still doing well and shooting lots. I assume you like the extra reach of the 7D vs. the MKIV. What is the reason you change ISO more with the MKIV?

The MkIV gives me more latitude than the 7D when it comes to ISO settings. I hardly go over ISO 800 with the 7D while I feel comfortable to go up to ISO 1600 and over with the MkIV. Being in the Sunshine State I get to use the 7D most of the times (yes I like the extra reach of the 7D) and I don't find any major problem using NR on the 7D nor the MkIV files. I always have on me both the 7D and the MkI V(paired with the 70-300L IS) when I do IF shooting, anyway. I also use the lenses set at f/8.

That makes sense about the iso limitations of the 7D in comparison to the MKIV. I'm sure there is less post work with the MKIV but also a trade-off of less reach. Thanks for the response and it's also interesting to hear that you value the 70-300L for in-flight shots. I've never used that lens but I hear it focuses quickly and has great image quality.
