I'm starting a new personal project. It's a series of portraits of people who make things with their hands. My goal is to shoot these as single portraits of the subject within the environment that they find themselves in every day, but with a bit of production quality. Yesterday I shot my first three subjects and I'd love your thoughts...
What a great set of bright and sharp amazing photo's! Good job framing all those shot's! Only thing this is missing is a picture of you making the pictures!

The only thing I think you might want to re-consider is if it's really necessary to do the extra "make-up" like the icing on the face in #1 and the abundance of paint in #3. I think there is maybe a fine line there that, when crossed, could take you from a fun/flattering/insightful/portrait vibe to a more commercial/mocking/parody vibe. I am assuming that your intention is more the former than the latter.

Thanks! Been thinking a bunch about that very subject over the last few days. What I decided was that I wanted to try to shoot these as if it were a commercial or editorial shot for a magazine. Therefore we decided to go for it with a little bit of styling. Ultimately, these were the first in the series, though. We may push it further or pull it back, but these were sort of the beginning of an exploration and I wanted to feel it out a bit.

all awesome...Shoemaker for reasons I can't quite describe is just outstanding
That guy is 94 years old. He started repairing shoes when he was 11. He runs his shop by himself and is insanely busy. In the 45 mins we were there, he must've had 20 different customers stop in. He was squatting, running around and was the nicest guy you could imagine... Again, he's 94!

and busy will keep him young....nice photos and I am ok with the frosting and the paint.....I also like the way the people have clearly gotten into the photo.....from a fun perspective....thanks for sharing
The shoemaker is awesome, both the photo and the subject.
Out of curiosity, how are you finding your subjects? I actually do business with the guys over at Abnrml, really cool guys and they make some awesome stuff.

This is a terrific project. Even better than the photographic aspect, you'll get to meet some interesting people with fascinating stories. Thanks for sharing.
