Last Sunday, we drove to Napa to buy gifts for our adult friends (wine!). Fall is on it's last legs so I decided to pull over and take a few snaps. Merry Christmas everyone! Hope u guys like them.
There is a lot I like about these images. The color, shallow DOF, rimmed backlight. Only thing I am not crazy about is the expression from the young lady in # 2. She looks annoyed.
The setting is gorgeous and the light is nice. I think the retouching and sharpening of the subject is a little too strong, it makes them look cut out and pasted on the background. I think backing off a little on the rim light retouching and sharpening would make them blend with the background better.
Thanks dmacmillan. I was a little surprised they look that way after I uploaded. Those were resized for web. The originals look much better. You can check my flickr.
Are any of these "brenizer" method? The amount of background compared to the shallow depth of field almost looks out of proportion... but I mean that in a good way, I love these types of photos.
Thanks for the info. I love these pics. That first one is just amazing. I want to be able to take pics like that of my family/kids (I'm not a pro). So if you don't mind I'd like to ask two more questions:
1) Do you think I could get something close to that look on APS-C, say with a 50mm f1.8 lens? I'd like to go FF but currently don't have a FF camera.
2) Any fill lighting or just lighten in post?
Thanks. These "environmental" type portraits, with tons of natural light and character, are my favorites.
Thanks Nexu. I think you can get somewhat of the same shot with a 50, but the separation won't be quite the same as that achieved with a longer focal length lens. You don't need a FF camera to get this effect.
I usually use fill, but since we just pulled over on the side of the road, it was just natural light. We literally took 10 minutes to take these because it was private property, haha.

Gotcha. It drives me crazy trying to resize for web and get good results. I guess it's the nature of the beast. What I don't understand is the different results for the same image I get from PS and LR.
Glad to hear the originals look good. Again, very nice! You need to remember the location for future use. So, what wine did you buy?
I did remember the location. But then again, tree lined raoads next to vineyards is a common site here. We picked up a case of assorted reds and whites from Castello di Amorosa. They had a sale, and we are big fans of their wines. Also a few bottles of the coveted Chateau Montelena Chard.

I raise my glass to you sir!
We're members of a wine tasting group that has been meeting monthly for over two years. We've used the Everyday Guide to Wine presented by Jennifer Simonetti. It's been a lot of fun and we've had a chance to try some great wine!
