December 13, 2013, Commack, N.Y. - Tamron Co., Ltd. (President & CEO: Morio Ono), a leading manufacturer of precision optics, has announced the release of an innovative ultra-telephoto zoom lens with a focal length range of 150mm to 600mm for full-frame and APS-C format DSLR cameras. The SP 150-600mm Di VC USD lens is priced at $1069 and will be available in the USA on January 17, 2014.

On one hand the price is pretty awesome, as I'll probably chooes a lens I don't use much to sell just so I can pick this thing up, even though I don't really "need" it right now. But it'll be fun to play with at the zoo if nothing else with that kind of zoom range.
On the other hand, am I the only one almost disappointed in the price? The price is looking like it'll be SO low, that I'm skeptical it can deliver the kinds of results I'm hoping it can. But I really hope I'm wrong, and this thing turns out to be a "must have" that punches well above it's weight price-wise.
After all, the Tamron 70-300 VC is a well-regarded lens priced very well, so maybe we're in for a surprise.

Well just remember, the lens is only one tool of the equation for great pictures. I am guessing much of the architecture was their from the 200-500 model. The price can easily be an introductory price and could go up later. Though there is some new things put forth in this lens, much of it has been already tried and proven.
I have a very inexpensive ($140) Tamron 70-300 that I have used for some impressive results, the pictures dictate that they came from a much more expensive lens.
Something around $1200-1500 is not 'cheap' and I am sure the value will exceed the price here on this 150-600 Tamron. If it were two stops faster then I believe the cost would have been significantly more. Speed is pricey in any game!
Curious about this lens also but waiting until I see more samples and feedback from real testing by some of you Anyone seen a picture of how long/big the lens hood is?

Oh, I agree 100% the lens is only one part of the equation. Speaking of that...it's funny you mentioned that if it were 2 stops faster, it'd cost significantly more. As an owner of both a 7D and 6D, I've found I generally get 2 usable stops of ISO more out of the 6D than 7D. Therefore, I'm looking forward to the first person who is lucky enough to have both a crop and full-frame camera at their disposal, as well as a 100-400L and this new Tamron 150-600. Similar FOV, but I wonder how the Tamron would do on the full-frame if it were up against something like a 7D and 100-400L, a combo that is highly regarded by many 'round these parts.
I'm sure that'll be a fun debate when it happens, regardless of how it ends up.

That person will be me if all goes to plan. I'm contacting my store today in Calgary and will get on a list or something. I have a very good copy of the 100-400 and I have every body under the sun

Let us know what the pricing and availability is for Canada. I haven't seen anything yet.
Tamron Canada responded to my e-mail and said Canada availability would be in February for the Canon mount. And based on past history they said the Nikon would come in April and Sony in June. But I think demand could delay that schedule. Pricing for Canada will be announced on Monday.
$1069, January 17th release. Really looking forward to comparisons with the current 100-400L; if it's close at 400mm and at 600mm versus the L + 1.4x III, then I may have found my long lens.
That price is just insane. I'm sure Tamron could have charged $2K and had a queue form. If Tamron had of built the 200-400 f/4 I'll bet we'd only be paying $5-6K.
Anyway can't wait, at that price it's hard to see a downside in being an early adopter for once.

It sound fantastic. 600mm for just over $1k. Never before have it been possible to get such a long lens for this low price. Tamron will sell a lot of lenses for sure
Now we are down to $1069 That is crazy and almost worries me that this lens won't be made well. But at that price this is going to open up the 600mm world to a lot of people that are always complaining they can't afford to get to those focal lengths. As long as one has some good light because it is f/6.3 at 600mm. I guess it will be like other lenses and only report 5.6 to the camera to allow AF on the non-f/8AF bodies.
You could pay more if it would make you think it would make it better
Will hope the lens has its sweet spot at f/7.1-f/8. Will hope that the lens has good mechanical performance both in Hot weather and in Cold weather where extremes can effect tolerances the most.
Will hope the benefit of smart cost production methods and efficiency will put more on the table for us to benefit from.
I love 'L' glass but saying that $1100 isn't enough to pay(Tamron 150-600) makes me wonder if $11700 isn't too much to pay (200-400 Canon)? Don't get me wrong, the reviews of this lens are the very very best ever!
I hope that the value exceeds the cost as in most of the Tamron glass I have owned, 90 macro, 180 macro, 17-35, 19-35, 28-75, 70-300, and a bunch of older fixed and Adaptall mount lenses in the film days.
I was thinking about this lens though..........Sigma 200-500 2.8 EX DG APO for $25999
It won't be a lens for everybody but it is likely to be a lens for many to benefit from, just can't imagine that Tamron is moving forward to 'tarnish' their name and quality. This might be the stepping stone for their next effort of a faster version of a high end offering in the longer glass arena
I will be giving one a try ASAP with a completely open mind. I have owned the Canon L's 100-400, 300, 400, 400 DO, and 500 f/4. This will be fun
