Novoflex ASTAT-NEX Tripod Collar for Sony NEX Lens ASTAT-NEX B&H
Below I indicate to which adapters the ASTAT-NEX Tripod Collar attaches.

For big heavy lenses one would mount the lens on the tripod anyway.
So in that case the ASTAT-NEX Tripod Collar is better removed.
The Novoflex adapters are extremely well made, not cheap, but worth it IMHO.
It's the same as with a tripod! You either buy the best one first or you buy again!
Of course, my favorite adapter for mounting an M lens on a NEX camera for freehand use is this one.
Reason being, as soon as you begin to focus lens magnification switches on.
Once something is in focus, focus peaking is engaged. Very slick!
Hopefully the Phigment adapter will work for all my Leica M lenses on the A7R as well.
If not, I have no doubt that Paul Habsch from Phigmenttech will make it work.
So, just for fun I cobbled together the following systems:
I wanted to know whether the Phigment adapter would pick up on focusing action of the R lens? Indeed it does. WOW!
With M lenses I had already noticed that a lens with a shorter focal length is more sensitive than one with a longer one.
So again here the 28-90 switches on magnification pretty fast, faster for 28 mm than for 90 mm.
The 180/3.4 requires a considerably longer throw - rocking back and forth a bit helps - but it will switch on magnification eventually.
For the APO-Extender-R2x + APO-Telyt-R 280/4 switching on magnification by focusing sometimes works, but it is not reliable.
Please note, I am using Firmware version 3 of the Phigment adapter.
Of course, one can always switch on magnification by pressing a button at the back of the camera.
Do you notice anymore play when you use the 2 adapters together as the Leica R to Leica M adapter and then the Phigment Leica M to NEX adapter. I opted for the Phigment Leica M to NEX adapter for my M mount lenses and the Novoflex Leica R to NEX adapter. I will be getting the Novoflex ASTAT-NEX Tripod Collar for my larger and heavier R lenses lacking a tripod collar. I expected to either set the Sony A7r to magnify when I wanted to focus the R lenses (unless the camera can be set to this). I can't remember if when I focus my Leica R lenses on my Lumix G1 if the camera can automatically adjust to magnify if I turn it on myself (I haven't used it in sometime).

Thanks sebboh and michael. If I get one of the Sony bodies, it definitely will be the A7; 24MP is enough for me (I worked professionally with 12MP for years, after all).
The lens in the Voigtländer range that excites me the most is the 40/1.4; using the GX7 bodies (mostly for video), the body I walk out the door with 90% of the time is the one with the 20/1.7 on it. Terrific lens.
I can see the A7 with the 40/1.4 being perfect for me. Did I mention the 40 is tiny?
I'd second makten's recommendation of the Voigtlander 40/2. As you noted in your WTB post in the Buy & Sell, the Olympus 40/2 is very expensive -- a consequence of its having become a cult lens.
In your situation, I would purchase the A7 in Australia (for about the same price as you could buy it from B&H) and get the bonus Metabones to NEX Canon adapter. For a little more than the cost of an Olympus 40/2 you could pick up a Voigtlander 40/2 in Canon mount and a Canon EF 40/2.8, both excellent lenses with the Canon providing AF when it's needed.
If you want tiny, the M-Rokkor 40/2 is smaller than the Voigtlander 40/1.4. I've had both and kept the M-Rokkor. It remains to be seen, though, how either of those lenses will perform on the A7(r).

And if that lens doesn't work very well, you also have the option for a smallish 40 mm SLR lens, like the Konica 40/1.8, the Voigtländer 40/2 or the Olympus 40/2. I almost forgot that I have the Konica, which is sharp and contrasty on film, so I'll have to get an adapter for that one. Bokeh is nervous at times, but distortion is low.
This is of course OT, but I just want to remind you all about the alternatives. I'm also gonna try the OM 28/3.5 and 35/2.8, that are very small.
The Minolta 45/2's a good small lens. It's Summicron-ish in it's SA and focus fall-off. The five-blade aperture and cheap build are the downsides, but it rarely goes for more than $30 and excellent copies are plentiful.

Sebboh, better just sell the RX1 while the price is still up there.
We now have zm18 cv21/1.8 24 elmarit, and the WATE, which they are telling us work.
not for sale. i'm still iffy on the pen f 42/1.2 though. i'm expecting you to test yours out when you get an A7(r?), and let me know if it really works on FF.

No one has given the guy more shit than me. I tweet him directly.
I agree the shots we want are easy, and I don't know why he is such a pain about it. But I stop at reading his mind.
At least he is sort of on the case. The event was full of photo people who gave us nothing. Compared to them the guy is hardly a "clueless moron" as our resident dean of humility suggests. Far as I know, that person does not shoot RF wides at all.
It's going to be up to us. Are we really surprised?
2 days full of preplanned photo ops, doesn't give anyone much time to shoot what and how you like, that he produced anything of value in spite of the situation deserves a thanks not mud being thrown, and yes, he has at least used RF lenses on them vs the other photogs at that event.
It takes a lot to satisfy this alt forum, no half-assed attempts will do, only full-assed.

In this video he says the 18mm Zeiss and the "24 2.8". Does anyone know what is the "24 2.8" that he is referring to?

Well we at least know the WATE looks good ON the A7... far better than on an M9. Not so sure about the image quality though unless you feel confident judging from a 3 inch LCD.
But it actually almost looks like it was designed to fit on the A7.
I was thinking the same, but the way he says it would typically mean he would have said it too was a Zeiss, but he didn't say it was a 24/2.8 Zeiss, so I'm more inclined to think he did mean Leica.
Anyone have an email addy or know if he hosts pics on Flickr or anything?
So, I know it must have been discussed before, but what is the best M/E adapter mechanically? I would imagine something like the Novoflex or Voigtlander?

Edward,
I can not say if this is mechanically the best (but certainly very close if not equal) but it is the most functional:
Unfortunately it is out of stock at present and is not CE certified. Once in stock if need be I am sure that one of us in Canada or the US could arrange to ship you an adapter to avoid issue going through Customs (due to non CE certification) if need be. When I looked at the Sony A7r at PhotoPlus and I mounted my Phigment LM-NEX adapter with my Minolta CLE MC 40mm f2 M-Rokkor lens onto the camera and adjusted the focus, the camera automatically recognized a lens was mounted and went into magnified view (just as it is supposed to).

Thanks Rich. Certainly the Phigment has the best functionality and I will seriously consider it. I would be very interested to know if it has the same precision and uniform flatness as the Novoflex or Voigtlander.
