Well..., this is both spot-on, and also terribly unjust to anyone who has a legitimate beef with one aspect or another with one or both of these cameras.

The thing that is so interesting about these cameras is that they simultanously have very good full-frame sensors, interchangeable lenses with a short registration distance (also implying a small camera), and a high-res EVF. There isn't really anything else compelling about them, and if you are uninterested in one of these features, there are other choices, many of which are better.

I agree with every word of this, including the part of I may have one and sooner than later. BUT, besides size, what do these cameras really offer that I can't get in the D800e?

Greg,

You gain the ability to mount almost any 35mm SLR/DSLR lens ever made for any camera system, the ability to mount most medium format lenses, and this is the first FF camera that has the ability to mount Leica and other M-mount lenses some of which will perform quite well.

I agree as well...but one major advantage/ gain over a D800e is much, much superior Live View. One also, of course, gains the ability to adapt many lenses that are not adaptable to Nikon.

Thank you both for great points and a better LV is truly something that would benefit me a great deal!
I will keep enjoying the information here and will join the owners in the near future!
Thank you,
Greg

^^ This.

I couldn't believe how bad the D800/e's live view is, a major failing of the camera IMO. It's particularly noticeable given how good live view is on even the cheapest Sony NEX and other like cameras. Had I not experienced NEX / other mirrorless cameras, I might not have felt so... cheated when I fired up the D800's live view.

Size is the meat on the table, for me. Lens adaptability are the vegetables (I love veges!), and much improved live view is icing on the cake.

For me, it's simple. I can use my Canon Tilt-Shift lenses, Zeiss ZE lenses, and a variety of "Alt" lenses with my existing Leitax or adapted Canon mounts on a 36 MP body.

Plus, the A7R fits in the "battery pocket" of my Canon bags.

There is mention of it in some threads, but I've been unable to find it anywhere on Sony's sites...

Ha, found it

My current favorite photographer (who has been for a while) just got an A7 and used it on a shoot (with Leica 35 and 50 lux lenses).

He wrote his impressions (with some beautiful NSFW sample photos) here: http://blog.micmojo.com/2013/sony-a7/

He is a die-hard film shooter, so this camera will be used primarily as a backup it seems.

Amazing images! The 35 and 50 Lux's look great here The 50 Lux looks to be great on the A7r so far too, with the Novaflex adapter.

My a7r is on its way, I’m thinking about picking up a 50mm (I shoot Canon) anyone using a Zeiss 50mm f2 MP with their a7r.

out of curiosity what compelling items do other FF cameras have that this lacks. to my mind it's better tracking AF and better build (but only some of them actually have better build).

after using the rx1 for a bit, i've come to the conclusion that i like sony's ergonomics better than canons or nikons for the most part btw.

there is a very good reason for the shorter registration distance to my mind incidently – it allows you to use helicoid adapters on rangefinder lenses. also, it's still better than the f-mount with regard to the design of fast lenses. any design that works on f-mount will still work on e-mount, but there are obviously a ton that will work with e-mount but not f-mount.

this camera should be a home run for me since all 3 of the points you list are things i've been begging for.

Wondering what adapters the new A7* owners are buying.. I'm trying to pick up some Minolta, Leica R, Nikon F to E mount adapters. Looked at threads on the same here but still a bit confused about what to get. Novoflex, Metabones, Fotodiox, Voigtlander, Hawk etc

What are you guys buying ?

Kind of like a motorcycle is just an engine with wheels. It will go fast, get you there and is fun to ride. But it doesn't have a lot of things that are included in a sports sedan.

But all kidding aside, I've sold all of my Nikon and Pentax DSLR's because two of the three things that you mentioned are super important to me and Nikon and Canon DSLRs don't have them. The only reason I would have a DSLR is if I was still doing sports.

I've had good experience with Metabones and Voigtlander. With Novoflex too, but not any better than those other two (no justification for being triple the price). If you're patient and don't mind driving back and forth to the UPS Store a lot, a buddy of mine just buys and returns Fotodiox adapters until he gets a good one (they have horribly sloppy tolerance, but by happenstance occasionally one works right). It's not worth saving ~$50 to me, but if it is to you...

Interesting. I've had very good luck with the fotodiox adapters. I have their Leica M to NEX, Olympus OM to NEX and they both seems to work very well giving me sharp images. Maybe I'm lucky.

I'd imagine that the FF sensors are going to require better adapter tolerances compared to aps-c sensors.

I have Voigtlander M to E, and Fotodiox pro F to E and bought Metabone R to E and F to E recently. I feel Metabone has at least as good build quality as Voigtlander with half price and Fotodiox in no way can compare with either.
I was thinking about Novaflex, but not sure how deep I will be into sony A, and feel: for the price, I can buy so many adaptors plus other useful accessories.

Sure I haven't tried the adaptor on A7r yet, but feel Metabone are good stuff, at least from Build quality POV.
