Out of curiosity, can you link to any similar shot with something else than the RX1 that does this better (wide open) at 35 mm?
here's an rx1 shot wide open, not quite as close with lots of oof highlights of varying brightness (no high iso artifacts though): http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7325/10265623696_c0c36cfbb5_o.jpg
a better comparison would be at f/2.8 i suppose (and identical shots of course).
the rx1 is shockingly smooth for it's speed and focal length, but it's not perfect either.
i didn't say it had bad bokeh, that was tariq, but it looks to me like the FE has slightly more defined borders to oof highlights whereas with the rx1 the oof highlights become slightly dimmer towards the edges. the FE looks better to me than most 35mm lenses. that is a pretty terrible scene for bokeh. i'm more interested in performance a slightly longer focus distances, but i'm keeping my rx1 so i don't really care about the FE 35/2.8.
Really? Maybe it's not a fair comparison, because the conditions are very different but to me that example from Sebboh looks smoother.
BTW, I agree with Sebboh. I also don't think the 35/2.8 looks terrible. From what I've seen so far I might even like it better than the hugely popular Sigma 35/1.4. It's just not like the 35/2 Sonnar.

Looking at the RX1 and other cameras in that series, and now the A7 cameras and their lenses, what impresses me about their compact camera efforts of late is that Sony seems to be placing optical qualities high on the list of design priorities, not just resolution or other features that make for good results in comparison lists.
It feels like there is a new sheriff in town at Sony-land.
I agree. If I were buying one of the A7's, that FE 55 would be first on my list. It looks really exceptional.

I'm sure that FE 35 2.8 will produce great images for many folks. The rendering is just not as close to the RX1 35 Sonnar as I would have hoped (and yes, for me the RX1 35 lens is the best I have used at that focal length so it is a high bar) - and that very well may be a technical restriction given the design of the RX1.

Yeah I'm really torn about the 35 FE, it's very light so it makes for a good light portable setup, but the price tag makes me consider otherwise. Still haven't decided if I want to get a AF lens or just stick with MF lenses and wait for newer FEs

Wish the FE55 was available first, but am happily going to check out the FE35 for a few weeks without being distracted so it's all good. I hope to compare it with the Sigma 35/1.4DG, assuming my lens is returned promptly from Gentec in Ontario where a loose mount and firmware update are being addressed.

sebboh makes the pen 42 look like it has good boca, so.......
I daresay the cv 35/1.2 will match his "precious" without a sweat.

I don't think anyone's saying the bokeh on the FE 35 is bad, per se. It just looks more "normal" compared to the RX1. I'm not sure I've had a photo with the RX1 at any distance or aperture where fine detail in the background looks particularly "jittery," which is common with most lenses. As others have said, the RX1's bokeh almost looks like tele bokeh.
Eigter way, if I were buying an A7/R, I'd certainly buy both the 35 and 55.

My first thought after seeing that video was...damn, there must be a hell of a lot of disposable income in S. Korea for that many people to line up to buy multi-thousand dollar cameras as if they were cell phones.

It's an outrageously successful and wealthy country.

This is strange. Amazon has stopped offering 2% rewards on the A7/r and its lenses and accessories, before they've even shipped. Guess they underestimate demand.

A questionable investment unless you have alot of disposable income, IMHO.
The first native I'd get would be the 2470---if it's as good as it should be.
that plus a 2300 body is plenty of money to spend.
Once we have the cameras out to good hands we will see many primes working well with them, I'd wager. In addition Zeiss will announce the new line of MF primes in early 2014 most likely.
I'd guess the FE 35 and 55 will be seen on the used market for at least 20% below retail by this time next year, and there will be alot of competitive options.

If you're right, another way to look at it is you rent each lens for approximately $200 for the year if you end up selling them at the end of the year. That doesn't seem like a bad deal to me.

' It just looks more "normal" compared to the RX1.'
That is going to be it. It's not perfect but what is? Given the price the RX1 now goes for in some quarters, imagine if its lens went on the a7r and cost maybe $1000, who would not be interested? That 36Mp sensor is likely bound for the next 'RX1', quite a prospect for Sony.

My logic would be: a practical AF lens may be useful, and the 2470z is the versatile one. There goes 1200 bucks. 3500 total. IF I have another 1800 burning a hole....would this really be the place to put it? Meaning the FE primes. In my case I have the cv 35/1.2 and 50/1.1 which are both much more interesting lenses, and together they are worth about the same--or less. They are not loosing value.
I don't have the extra 1800 so it's moot---but I sure won't be trading those unique high speed lenses for AF sony primes. Unless they really fail.
The real issue as we all know is wide angle. The zeiss 2470z gets me there.
If we don't think it's a landscape quality lens----the jury is out, maybe the argument gets weaker.
But I'm inclined to think that thing is very sharp.
after all for 1800 you'll be able to grab a used RX1. To me that would be more useful. And sharp 50s are common as dirt.
And if I really had money to burn, I'd find a M9 for 3500 as "backup"
