All the NEX cameras I have thus far owned have a plasticy sound that makes it seem like the shutter is near the surface (which it is, comparatively); with my DSLRs, the sound seems softer and muffled like it's deeper in the body. Not louder in volume, but higher in pitch, therefore more noticeable to the human ear.

The sound in the video, I find, is pretty much on line with my NEX 6 and 7, if that helps you for reference.

I can't really tell till there is another camera presented alongside, a FF DSLR. I need a point of reference. I love the silent mode on my 5D3 but video it shot on it's own with the gain pumped up and it's also going to sound noisy. The background sound in that video is rather high so you really need some point of reference.

Interesting news I just received from Adorama customer service. I ordered the a7R and the 24-70/2.8 Vario-Tessar lens. Everything I have read so far suggests the camera will be available at least a month before the lens, so I called Adorama to make sure the camera gets shipped separate from the lens. The customer service person told me that BOTH camera and lens are due to be shipped the first week of November. This is much sooner than anything I have read publicaly on availability for either item. I'm wondering what if anything others have heard.

I continue to see comparisons all over...or rather statements that the rx1/r are dead now..

I just don't see these cameras as competition for each other. Far too many differences from the obvious ilc to the smaller size, faster lens, etc. I'm not sure why people don't think they can coexist.

I'm excited to get a system like this in a couple of years. When native lenses are available which are fast. But given the cost of the lenses and system as a whole I hold my assertion this is a tweeter camera right now, again, right now.

It's not taking dslr users for the most part, it's way to expensive for mom and pop, it's for photographers adapting manual glass, for now...and even for that a lot of results are needed. It's a gray looking camera idea. It's not a system yet, as expected. And the lens prices, for what they are, seem astronomical for now.

Zeiss working on lenses for the A7(r):

Q: Will the ZM lenses be available for E mount (autofocus I suppose) or do you plan to develop new lenses specially suited to digital photography for it?

A: We are currently working on manual focus lenses for these new full-frame CSCs. They will have an interface to provide EXIF data to the camera. They are expected to be in stores by the end of 2014. However, we cannot provide any additional infos right now.

That's pretty wild that they are working on manual focus lenses.

just put my Nikon cameras up for sale locally and am ordering one asap. I, for one, welcome our new Sony mirrorless overlords. This is the first time since 2008 (5D2) that I've gotten excited over a camera. so much love. lol, I previously said I'd wait a while before getting one...

I wonder how is the quality of this new Sony FE 35mm F2.8 lens. Is is really a Zeiss quality with with aluminum body or its only a half baked Sony product? I am thinking whether I should unload my Zeiss ZF lesnes for all this new Sony Zeiss...

Any Zeiss AF lens is going to have more plastic than an equivalent Zeiss MF lens: that's just a reality of needing to keep the weight down for the AF drive. I think we can use the Sony FF alpha mount Zeiss lenses as a guide: the ZA lenses may have a different look than ZE/ZF, but the IQ is generally excellent.

You essentially can't build an AF lens as solidly as a manual lens, especially with mirrorless lenses that require silent AF and stepless aperture for video. Fully manual lenses with helicoids are too heavy. The build of this lens will be like the rest of the ZA E lenses, with a lightweight, but solid metal shell and more polycarbonate on the inside.

Pre-ordered the A7 and 35mm from my local shop. Cancelling my amazon pre-order from early Wednesday so the rest of you move up a spot.

Now to figure out which adapters I need, at least OM, C/Y, old Nikkor, EOS, FD...

Now it's wake up call for Canikon...

I will keep my 5DIII for years to come, however, future looks "brighter green" for the mirrorless side of the garden.

Just pointing out that all the advances from Canon sensor division seem to point at in-sensor hybrid AF from now on, wouldn't that be pointing out at better mirrorless cameras soon enough? Canon M FF anyone?

I know, sounds hopeful...

When I checked the Sony store they didn't list the electronic front curtain shutter, but now I see that they included. There is no electronic front curtain shutter w/ A7R:

A7 has it:

makes sense. zeiss has been explicit before in saying that they think AF is detrimental to absolute maximization of image quality. they've been producing manual focus lenses for canon, nikon, and leica FF digital cameras, their latest top tier lens series is manual focus, and of course manual focus is best for the video market.

i suspect zeiss doesn't really take crop cameras seriously from the perspective of maximizing iq, thus the touits with AF. they didn't even think it was worth making lenses for µ4/3.

anyway, this makes me very happy!

Thanks for looking into that. That might explain why the A7R is so noisy. My 5N is much noisier when the first curtain is enabled.
