if exiftool can change the iptc of arw raw files, then my original premise that arw raw files can be a proof of ownership is no longer valid. +
It depends what you are after. In normal workflows you would never give the raw to anyone else, and thus the raw itself is the proof you require, since others could at most have a JPG exported from the raw.

Mainly for paranoia. I have three 4-terabyte external hd backups. If any one of those ever gets lost or stolen, it would be nice to have at least something where your copyright info. cannot be removed, but with exiftool and probably others, that is not true when it comes to the raw exif info.. -W

3x4TB is too much data ever to need, so I guess you don't throw anything away. I have about 50000 photos, almost in all raw, and they take way too much space, and I will never ever see them all again if left like that. I am slowly culling them, sometimes quite brutally, because let's face it, the damage they do in the size of my backups and speed of my machine way outweighs the potential benefit of being able to go back and look at any mediocre shot I have ever made. I hope to cull it into two chunks, one with all my important family and people photos, including most of my travel photos, and another pile with anything artistically "valuable", possibly including some great travel photos, maybe 5000 photos max, and hopefully less. All in all, I want my life to fit in 1TB, so that I can easily back it up multiple times, and keep multiple copies, on rotation.
p.184 #4 · Official: Sony A7 and A7R Fullframe Mirrorless
I should clarify, that's 3 external hd copies of 4-terabytes each, and only about 2.5 terabytes of each 4-tb hd copy are currently used up. And that includes a lot of psd files with a number of those psd files at 1-gig each (or whatever maxes out on ps cs3). But nonetheless, all my original photos (probably about 30,000) are in raw and jpg formats and they also take up a lot of that storage space.
p.184 #5 · Official: Sony A7 and A7R Fullframe Mirrorless
Ah okay, that sounds only like a little more space than my library, and somewhat less photos.
I am not sure how you would go about proving ownership in this case. Perhaps you ought to encrypt your backups. I use FileVault on my Mac, and have encrypted file systems on my Time Machine drives.
p.184 #6 · Official: Sony A7 and A7R Fullframe Mirrorless
Yea, encryption is an option, I may just end up doing that. But still would be a nice feature if sony added the copyright info. in their raw exif like Canon does, that would at least add some level of comfort and deterrence to the casual finder of lost properties, without any further user intervention. It should be a no brainer for Sony to have done, but I don't know much about the Sony ecosystem so maybe they operate under a different culture. -W

Agreed, but all Sony managed to do with their first firmware update was make startup slightly faster, and the JPGs slightly better, and they really don't have a history of making many changes in firmware, or adding any value to their cameras after the sale, so I wouldn't hold my breath.

Fred, this is really getting odd. I have the same instructions. Followed the steps with camera on first w/o the lens as it states and attaching the lens+adapter combo yet, I get AF lock with beep but no DMF etc... BUT with the 70-200 it works as you indicated. Maybe its the 24-105 combo that doesn't work correctly
Matt
Matt,
I just tested my 70-300L IS and 24-105L IS. Their behavior is identical to the 70-200 f/4L IS. (from my description)

You can type info like that into an import action in Lightroom, and have it automatically applied at import time. It won't end up in the raw, but typically you don't give anyone the raw anyway. By the time you have processed and exported a JPG, it will be present.
Yep, thanks for the advice! I found the option in LR to do this. It is a decent workaround.

Looks like I got 2 out of 3 working, Fred. Tested my 70-300L IS & it too works perfectly. BUT, put the 24-105 back on and its a no go, No DMF available and the AF does not focus as well. Only when I temporarily put the metabones back into green mode will the AF lock on and beep. Guess it must have to do something with my specific copy. No big problem in terms of using since I can still put it in MF mode and get the focus magnification. Did verify the 24-105 does function properly with both the 1D-X & 5D3, so it must be one of those weird anomalies.

I think it might be the firmware version of your 24-105; I saw somewhere that the metabones sometimes works differently on different versions of the firmware of canon lenses. But I don't think Canon lenses have user upgradeable firmware, so sorry it may not help..

Anyone have any experience with lightzone for processing raw files? They are open source and free, you just have to register. I've downloaded their software and it looks to be a very powerful tool. They currently don't have a profile for the a7r but according to the below forum link (pertinent messages dated 3/26/2014)), I've asked them about it and they are working to get one out in about a week's time.

I'll probably end up buying LR anyhow, but since I loaded their eval version a year ago and never really used it, I no longer can run on eval mode to test. There is also a review on the net that thought that LR outputs (as well as all other raw editors for the ar7) were not as good as the native sony image data converter albeit slow and slim on features. I don't really need the LR cataloguing since it will likely just screw up my 6 years organization system. I'll give Lightzone a try when they get their a7r profiles together in a week or so. It would be nice if Lightzone had lens profiles though, I use dpp's lens corrections all the time for my canon raws.

Yeah: you will really need lens profiles if you use any of the zooms for the A7 series; they are designed in the mirror less tradition of depending on software distortion correction, which is otherwise too extreme for many kinds of pictures.
The primes you can survive without, though you will need vignetting correction on the 35 for the kinds of pictures that vignetting looks bad on. Also, for pictures that are evenly white or grey you might miss the flat field pluggin to get the magenta cast out of the corners. (I love the 35FE; amazingly sharp for so small. But the price you pay for that size (worth paying) is a little magenta in the corners and vignetting)

Well so far I've only had AF success with my Canon 24-105L, 85mm f/1.8, and surprisingly enough the 40mm stm. No AF fun for the 24L and the 35L AF works only when it wants to (or was it the other way around with the 24L and 35L?). (I know, I can use MF). I will be getting sony's 28-70 kit soon only because it was cheaper as a bundle that included the a7r, the lens, and the flash, but will want to play with that sony lens once it is off backorder and shipped to me. The 40mm stm attached to the a7r imo is a marrage made in heaven, it's a beautiful couple, light and inconspicuous! Most bystanders will mistake you for a soccer-mom/dad with a point-and-shoot! I'm hoping to force myself to work with that setup and have the camera with me at all times and go back to the big canon guns only when there is a planned photo trip.
As far as lens correction for the lightzone software, I'll bring it up in the their forums, the moderator and developer there is very hands-on and open to new ideas and features. Nonetheless, they work only for pure pleasure with no working wage so new features will likely only happen if enough members also chime in.
