Some random assorted thoughts…

- DO WANT. BOTH. lol

- price is cheaper than I expected for the bodies, higher than expected for the lenses.

- I'm curious to see how my Sigma 30 F2.8 performs on the a7, both in crop and full frame mode (I love using the Nikon G 35mmF1.8 DX on my D700, with the given limitations).

- That Sigma 30 mm also makes me think twice about the Zeiss 35 F2.8, especially at that price.

- the price of refurbished RX1 is dropping already, it's 150 euros cheaper now. Actually, pricewise refurb RX-1 = A7R = A7 + 35 f2.8 approx.

- yay Nex battery, so I can use the spares I have for my Nex 5n. Too bad the RX-1 doesn't also use the same battery.

- should I keep the nex 5n as a complementary, or sell it (leaning towards selling it)

- the f-values of the lens line-up disappoint a bit. F2.8 and F4? I love my Nikon G 24 f1.4 and 70-200 F2.8. Hm.

- man do those touit lenses seem like a bad decision from Zeiss to focus on crop. If those would work straight away on E-mount FF, the lens line-up would look a lot better.

- same for the Zeiss A-mount lenses: any plans for a 135 mm e-mount prime? I'd rather have that than the a-mount plus one of the adapters.

- my current nikon F to e-mount adapter should work, right?

- sadly no gps (rather have gps than wifi, for example)

- DO WANT! FOR GOOD MEASURE: DO WANT! But which one? Leaning towards the plain A7 one moment, leaning towards the A7R the next. And then thinking about refurb rx-1 and A7…

- Any word on macro lenses? <3 the 105 VRII, both as a macro and a portrait lens.

- not sure how to proceed, leaning towards selling D700 and nex 5n and just getting an A7( R ) + Zeiss 35 f2.8.

- I wish delivery was next week so I could take it to France with me the week after that, but oh well

What about volume? Weight is only one aspect of ultralight backpacking ?
I'm asking because I'd like to know as well.
For me the biggest benefit will be volume savings (some old smaller prime lenses along with the sony a7).
Besides, if I truly wanted to go light I wouldn't be carrying around zooms.

Volume would definitely be less with the Sony. Not so much on the lenses, but definitely on the camera. Obviously bringing 4.5 pounds of camera gear puts me outside of the ultralight backpacking crowd, but I certainly wouldn't complain about saving some weight on my hikes. And leaving out the 70-200 lens, the sony setup would be 2 pounds compared to 3 pounds for the Canon, which is a big difference.

As I said earlier, I'll definitely be looking at the reviews and see how it performs. I could see one of these cameras becoming my default landscape camera.

Another thought… why is the 70-200 white? I like black (like my 70-200 Nikon)...

Sony got that from Minolta. Minolta, Mamiya and Canon do that. The claim is that the white finish reflect more light, absorbs less heat and therefore expands less and stays more true optically. I tend to think that if this was really an issue, they would all do it. My suspicion is that it was more a marketing ploy. You know when someone is using Canon's big lenses because of the whitish finish (Minolta and Mamiya were much smaller in recent times). At a football match, you can count the white lenses and know how many pro photographers use Canon, and the rest are Nikon, more or less. Btw, you can order Nikon's big lenses in light grey, if you like that sort of thing.

Or just work on improving my eidetic memory... which is what a true, diehard ultralight backpacker would do.

Thanks Fred.

That's terrible planning by Sony. I know most people here are using adapted lenses (and if I get one, that'll by my primary use), but making the camera available a week before any lenses are available, and having only one or two lenses available in the first month is not good.

"Here's your camera! Too bad there's nothing to mount on it!"

I also personally don't care about the availability of native lenses; but, releasing a camera before availability of not even a single native lens is indeed extreme.

A note for A mount lens users, including Leitax alt lens users such as myself, who get interested in the a7/r. It makes little sense (no sense actually) to fit thousand dollar plus lenses on $16 special 'Kmart' adapters. I had resigned myself to contacting SK Grimes for something made special and 'perfectly' planar, but saw at BH this 'dumb adapter' made by Sony, due November:

http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1008165-REG/sony_laea3_a_mount_to_e_mount_lens.html

It appears to be the quasi-final solution, I trust Sony to get these things right (until Roger Cicala tells me otherwise - if you read this Roger I would like to know your thoughts) and it looks bulletproof. Actually Roger's test used a 500 gram lens on a NEX from memory, not sure if it involved the body's tripod mount.

This is a new part, due next month. Does not have the mirror business, just a (hopefully) well made connector. Also important, it weighs but 110 grams and has a tripod socket which is detachable. Good, many A mount lenses are heavy, and my CY 100-300 and Minolta 200 HS certainly are. I would not trust the A7r tripod socket for such lenses in a pink fit.

Part number is: LAEA3

not to be confused with the similar but E crop camera LAEA1 and the full monty SLT LAEA2 and LAEA4.

One thing to note for people new to Sony or coming back from an absence of a year or two, Sony now considers the batter charger to be optional. Instead, they include an AC Adapter in the kit so you can charge it on camera or give them $50 for the charger. If the specs on Sonystore's US site are correct, that trend continues with these cameras.

Which makes me very happy I own an NEX-7 that came with the charger.

My A99 came with a charger. It might only happen with the low end NEX

Well the RX-1 doesn't come with a separate charger either, if I'm not mistaken.

All ISO 50 does is a use a metering trick. It's the same as using ISO 100 with +1 exposure comp. It could be convenient if you shoot jpeg, but it is useless with raw.

My RX1 didn't come with a charger, but I didn't care. I bought some of the generic batteries with charger, and it is fine.

At the moment, the ZA 85/1.4 or Sigma 85/1.4 with the LA-EA4 adapter, although a native 85/1.8 is rumored to come to the system at some point, I believe.

also the EF 85/1.8 and 85L with the metabones adapter, but i think the AF will be too slow with them for anything useful.
