Ah, wise words grasshopper (jcolwell). Worth practicing and not just preaching. 3iron said "The Sigma will be about the size of my 300 and really is not that bad to HAND CARRY." (I uppercased to assist effective understanding of the point). Also, as I mentioned in my post, I go on multihour hikes in areas with wildlife, so those two points combined is exactly what I was speaking to.
In all seriousness, I don't know why you felt I warranted such sarcasm. Seems a little overkill.
I've nothing that large, my biggest lenses are the 70-200f2.8LIS and the 100-400L. I've used r-straps , but if I was using a backpack why not connect the camera to its straps much like the TT Rotation has the ability. You can buy the camera strap, and the straps that attach to the bp from TT if your creative enough it shouldn't be a problem. Myself I prefer the TT modular setup but thinking of adding a Lowepro S&F vest to a mil spec lbv( load bearing vest) to my TT belt for the ex trended periods of wear and when more space for carring is needed.
I'm also thinking of how to attach a strap similar to the strap to the harness/vest setup.
