I think the ring looks great. Some of the shots are really good and some the lighting and processing dont work for me. I would also suggest moving the "ropes" farther away from the black backdrop as I can see it in the picture pretty well. Also I would suggest getting a different material for the floor as it doesnt look like the inside of a boxing ring.
I agree with you for the most part, the problem was limited space. I could not block the entrance to the gym, so I had to push the ring back as far as possible. This was also a low budget build, so I didn't want to spend a lot on materials. I went to home depot and bought carpet for $.41/per sq ft.

Hats off to you sir. The 1st shot is absolutely fantastic. I feel i am right in the middle of a real boxing ring. The mood created with the brilliant positioning of the lights along with a great post process is spot on.
Bravo to you and i salute all of your efforts in creating all of this from scratch. It is in essence the main difference between taking a shot and making the shot.

Great idea well executed, obviously it worked best when you shot tight enough to keep the floor and other BG mess out of shot, but with a black BG this shouldn't be too hard to clean up in post.

Excellent set, lighting, shots, post. Great concepts for space allotted.
How well was this received at the time of the event and when the photos were delivered? What was the feedback from the participants and those featured in the photos? Comments from participants at the time and after? How successful was this shoot?

How well was this received at the time of the event and when the photos were delivered?
At the start of the day people didn't understand it. It was new to them, and other boxing tournaments never had anything like this. They were scared to approach me. But as time went on more and more people showed up. The delivery method was different for them also. I guess this type of crowd is not used to ordering pictures from a website. I took all pictures for free, they could go to my website and preview the photos and order them if they like and have them mailed directly to their house (I use zenfolio).
What was the feedback from the participants and those featured in the photos? Comments from participants at the time and after?
Feed back was good, by the end of the night people loved the idea.
How successful was this shoot?
It depends on how you measure success. I succeeded in getting my name out there and producing some great photos. Not so successful financially though. I've only had a few orders come through so far. I haven't made a profit yet, if you take into account the cost of building the ring and cost of gas driving there and back (it was in a different town).
Price structure needs to be different.
As I had it: take pictures for free, have them order online.
As I should have done it: The boxing tournament promoter should have paid me a flat rate for my time and I provide all the photos free as a digital download. But I could also charge for prints.

So it seems this ended up as a beta test. And you have some very nice photos to show promoters of other venues that might want to hire you. I think the concept is good. Perhaps have other kinds of events. Like Skaters. Martial Arts. Even race cars. Things where you can construct another kind of set. It was a very cleaver environment you created to fit in a smaller space. That could have real merit. And brand you as someone who specialized in custom special environments and contemporary photos that appeal to crowds like this. This is something that photographers in the 19th century did. People are the same. Perhaps if you went to events like Civil War Enactments and had a special set for that. Lots of people there doing Cosplay. And then there are all those cosplay events. Intriguing.
