Too tired to do the rest, but here is a teaser. This is ACR->PS->jepg. I did not pump the colors up, but I did use a polarizer. This was just a roadside snapshot without the tripod, but it does show how some of the color looked this morning at Rock Creek Canyon.

I didn't go to Lake Sabrina or South Lake, I figured they must be similar to North Lake and I really didn't want to see them in their drained state.
Having never been up there, are you saying Lake Sabrina and South Lake are dry? No water flowing out of them?
I heard they drained them a couple years back, the water was needed for some hydroelectric project. I believe it to be true as I read it several places, and one photographer I spoke with yesterday in Rock Creek Canyon confirmed it.
There are some on the road that leads to North Lake, but by the time I got there the whole area was in shadow and that wasn't what I was looking for.
Strangely, I have found big aspens in the Highway 4 Bear Valley area. There is a 4WD road called Corral Hollow Road and there are a couple places along there that have groves of aspens with trunks 10-20" in diameter. Last time I was there was early August and they were all solidly green. I wonder when they will change? They are on the western slope at about 7500' altitude.

that gives hope. What time of the day would you expect best light: AM PM I amy also want to shoot back-lit!
BTW, I have been trying to find map of the area, none has any decent details. Can't buy paper maps either. I will be two days in Bishop. Hope they have maps at gas stations.
I just used the map in my Garmin GPS, but I also had along the Delorme Northern California Atlas, (should be available at most bookstores) and it covers the area in great detail down to just below Bishop. Worth having along.
Just head up 168 - you really hardly need a map. The left fork heads up to South Lake, the middle fork to Sabrina "Lake," and just above Aspendell there is a right turn to North Lake - a short drive, but steep and gravel in spots.

What the other Dan said.
My only caveat is the left turn to South Lake can be missed in the dark. Well at least I dide
The others to Sabrina, N. Lake are pretty obvious.
I might add that once you're headed up 168 into the hills, pay attention for other Aspen opportunities.
Side/back lit scenes, in the morning & afternoon, are the best.

Let me guess.
Go south from Bishop on 395 to Big pine. take 168 East and go from there?
I have two big California maps, National Geog. Two big road maps books. The Maps quest, Google... no help. Same thing no details. They all show Bishop in the middle of no where. No details around what so ever. I bet other than we nutty photogs, no one cares.

Uh, no.
Go south to Bishop on highway 395 and turn right/west onto 168 - a.k.a. "West Line Street" - toward North, South, and Sabrina Lakes. (Obviously, if you come to Bishop from the south, you'll have to turn left/west.) The intersection is the same one where the Galen Rowell Mountain Light Gallery is located.

Go to maps.google.com and search for "Bishop, CA" and you'll see it right away. There is plenty of detail on the map. I just looked.
Lake Sabrina has been drained. There was about 10 cfs being released to maintain the fishery and there were a bunch of folks fishing. I was there on Thursday. The aspens are probably peaking now. The aspens around North Lake were good. I was in the Rock Creek drainage above Tom's Place on Saturday and the aspens were peaking. About noon we were getting snow pellets and around 4 snow turned to flakes. Later in the day both Tioga and Sonora Passes were closed. I'd check to see if they've been re-opened. If your in the area you should have snow covered peaks down to about 7-8000 ft. The aspens around Conway Summit were about 1/2 turned, my guess they'll peak this weekend. It might be an early year.

Breath. Slowly.
Dan
That doesn't make sense. I just looked at the map, Google. 168 is South of Bishop. And you said Go South to Bishop, from Lee vining?.
All very confusing when one is not familiar. Can you draw a map? I t would much simple than describing. Just like I tell the guy our of town: go left . right, right. left. right right and you can't miss it! Sure he will miss it.
Bishop is about an hour south of Lee Vining.
Highway 168 West, starts in Bishop & is also called "West Line Street" where it starts.
Dan's directions are just you need.
Yes, Markleville might have great Aspens but its at a lower altitude, maybe 4000ft.
They will turn later, maybe weeks later. Bob, you can't be everywhere there are peaking aspens!
Get a good map of the area if you think it will help. I know REI has good travel maps.
Just plan on enjoying the trip, scenery and most of all JUST BREATHE!

I will look at REI for a decent map. All the maps I found are devoid of any details other than the name of Lee vining, Bishop. But I think locally in bishop I will find some. thanks for help.
I know I can't miss it. and for sure I will miss it the first time early morning in the dark. That is part of the fun.
One answer will clarify every thing. North lake, South lake, Lake Sabrina are all East of 395 on 168. Am I right?

Go to the link to the Galen Rowell Mountain Light Gallery that I provided in my previous post. That link provides a zoomable map showing the location of the gallery, which is right on the intersection where you turn onto 168/West Line Street. I named the streets for you in the previous message.
Or just go to Bishop and ask for directions. Everyone knows where this is.
Or, just like you "tell the guy" in your town, and to quote my prior message:
"Go south to Bishop on highway 395 and turn right/west onto 168 - a.k.a. "West Line Street" - toward North, South, and Sabrina Lakes. I can't make it any more straightforward than that. nugeny wrote:
I remember some one told me last year, one of the finest aspens forest is by Markleeville, way to the North. How is that?
Maybe that "someone" was referring to the large groves on Monitor Pass, between Markleeville and highway 395, more or less? Or perhaps this person was referring to the Hope Valley aspens along highway 88 between the upper reaches of Carson Pass and near Sorensen's and the turnoff to Luther Pass and South Tahoe?
I'm unaware of great aspens right in Markleeville.
