I voted for 17-55, but if you are getting the 70D for video, I can not recommend it. You would be better off going with one of the STM lenses.

I believe he's talking about the Live View auto-focus; but if the latest DPReview article on the Dual-Pixel AF is to be believed, he's completely wrong.

And further, there's no 'professional' STM lenses; they're all 'kit' type lenses save the primes, and their image quality scores reflect that.

I'm still in the 17-55 or 18-35 camp; based on what DPReview said about the 70D, I'd be inclined to believe that even the 18-35 will perform flawlessly when used with Dual-Pixel AF.

I like the 24-105 for FF but I would go with the 17-55 on a crop body

seriously I wouldnt get so het up about Live view AF .
the Dual pixel AF looks great and I can see great advantages if your shooting video . but ask yourself what you will shoot most of the time . for me for most of my stills I will always be shooting with the camera upto my eye using the normal Phase detect AF (and I suspect most stills shooters would be the same)

If im shooting live view then im tripod based and what im shooting is unlikely to be moving anyway

if STM is better for video AF (it most likely is) then I would have the 18-55 STM or 18-135 STM in the bag for the video . they have plenty good enough IQ for video work . and lets face it the 18-55 in particular wont break the bank or shoulder . in fact you will probably pick up the 18-55 for alomost nothing as a kit lens with the 70D , and the 18-135 STM will probaly be a very cheap deal as a kit as well

I still vote 17-55 for stills any day

Maybe 18-55 plus ultra wide. 10-22 or 11-16 tokina.

The 24-105 isn't wide on crop

15-85 good, I like 18-135, but something wider is nice for landscapes, too.

Kind of a silly question to be honest. For a crop camera, get the 17-55. For full frame, 24-105. Yes, it really is that simple.
