Wow this is cool! The original sigma 30 1.4 is one of the best bang for buck lenses on aps-c. I am very suprised that it does not vignette because the original version does for sure. The Tokina 11-16 does 15-16 mm on FF, but the corners are really weak. I bet there is a similar situation here, and the 35 1.4 A would blow it away. Still cool either way.

Why don't you just send the lens to Canon and let them adjust it? My 28 1.8 focuses quite well on all my camera bodies without MFA.
My 28 f1.8 focuses perfectly on a 40D, 50D and 7D without AMFA, on my EOS-3 film body as well; seems I've had good luck with all my primes so far, including the 50 f1.4 and 85 f1.8, not having any AF issues. Same has held true for both 100 macros and 300 f4L IS...I'll keep crossing my fingers that this continues.
The Sigma 30 f1.4 looks interesting, could be a nice evening/low light event lens...

Unfortunately I only got to use the lens indoors tether to the shelf. Bic Camera lets you mount up their display lenses. It's pretty cool.
No vignette on a full frame camera.
Maybe it vignette less than expected. But don't tell me it doesn't vignette on FF. The corners are nearly black. If a "normal FF lens" did vignette like this, people would go crazy here.

I have to admit some of the shots looks like some light vignetting, but then others show none. Maybe it depends slightly on the focus, like closer up is fine but as you get closer to infinity, it'll vignette a little. As others have said, "still interesting/cool"

For a 1D series, this might be the right lens, even though I'd still want something wider, like a 24/1.4
Wonder how the 18-35/1.8 will behave?

I expected people would understand what I meant. Of course there's going to be vignetting...The 30mm vignettes as a normal EF lens would but the 17-40mm has the expected black circle of EF-S.

I understand what you mean. But look in the corners and then tell me it vignettes like a normal FF EF lens do
It's great if you can use it on a FF body. But it vignettes very much (not like the average EF lens)
And what will happen when using the lens profile for vignetting and other stuff in PS, LR and other software ?

But it's clearly not experiencing mechanical vignetting as you would expect for a lens with a much smaller image circle fitted to a FF camera. What we seem to see is maybe a bit worse optical vignetting, but the shots might only need a light crop and/or some PP'ing to end up with a nice result, Maybe if we treat it like a 35mm lens there is no issue. Compare the shots to the 17-70 which shows the expected massive mechanical vignetting.

I think this calls for a new thread: APS-C lenses that cover the entire FF image sensor.
Inclusion criteria: May show fall-off of light in corners, but no true, full mechanical vignetting (AKA areas of zero light/pure black) circle. Zooms qualify if at SOME focal length they meet the inclusion criteria.

I've never been satisfied by my 28/1.8 (on 7D), and I've recently done some work with FoCal to understand why. The MA value is -10 for subjects closer than 1.2m, +8 for subjects around 1.6m, then drops back towards -3 towards infinity. None of my other lenses does anything similar. Do you think Canon would be able to resolve this? I don't know enough about what they do - would they adjust at one distance only?

Then do it! I think the subject of "Crop Hacks" has seen some quite interesting observations by now; though most of them pertained to the use of APS-C lenses on APS-H.

Can we include all 'hackable' solutions?
ie where a zoom vignettes on FF OR 1.3 crop at the wide end but will not when zoomed a bit won't .
Examples like are :
EFs 10-22
Tokina 12-24
Tokina 11-16
Unusable at any length are:
Both sigma 10-20's (from what I read)
EFs 17-55
I can't add anymore to the list but I will say that I would be very interested (and surprised if it didnt ) if the sigma 50-150 OS (not the older one) worked on a bigger sensor . The body of the lens is the same size as the ff 70-200/2.8

Sigma 10-20/4-5.6 is salvageable on APS-H from 11mm and up, but even there it gives "artistic" vignetting, so I'm not surprised it's not usable on FF at all. http://cs320923.vk.me/v320923358/f2f/CeJygzjTdII.jpg
1D Mark III, 11mm. http://cs320923.vk.me/v320923358/13ff/_fX9pQ2DdFM.jpg
1D Mark II N, 20mm.
I've seen a sample from Canon 60mm macro with an extension tube on FF, and it had no vignetting. I'm unable to find it again though (it wasn't on any of the 2 photo forums I visit, but somewhere else).

I stuck my 15-85mm on my 6D with some Kenko tubes- everything works, and with enough spacing you get no mechanical vignetting.
Just not sure what the usefulness of that would be, when you give up infinity focus and lose stops of light. I mean, the 24-105L is already faster and slightly sharper, and cost less in a kit than the 15-85 did .

Maybe the upside is that you get a lens that focuses pretty close? (not sure of the exact figures)
Have you tried a mount conversion of a 15-85?

But any macro lens will get you even closer. And the lens will also work at infinity or far away. So I can't see that you gain anything at all

I understand it's a stretch, but a macro lens needs to be bought, whereas extension tubes give new possibilities for any existing lens (I'm not that knowledgeable about the limitations... are there lenses that can't work with one?) I was interested if the 15-85 is good at any focal length, hence my question about the mount conversion.

You mean 17-70, as canons 17-40 is a full frame lens

Here's an example of badly my 28mm f/1.8 focuses. This is easily repeatable, time after time. It's always wrong.
this is kind of off topic now, but you've gotta send this lens to canon. this lens should look way better than this, even at f/1.8. i've had two copies.
