I should have added that I stayed at the Mt. Whitney Motel. Quiet? No. Off highway? Yeah, about ten feet off the highway. Shitty rooms but a great sign. Same with the Thunderbird in Bishop.

Charlie, where is that Do Not Pass Gas sign? That looks a lot like hwy. 129 in SE Washington, or somewheres in that neighborhood up where it's all winding roads and mountainous, and views galore.
Taken years ago- in Arizona.
Heading west from Kingman on the Old Highway 66- before getting to the town of Oatman.
I didn't see the graffiti until I was too close to it to stop, so I drove on until I found a place to turn around. Then I had to go by the sign again to find a place to turn around. THEN I had to park near the edge of the ravine in order to get my vehicle off the highway.
Who said life for sign-lovers was easy?

I often drove past this sign in SW Utah- so I finally photographed it.
Part of the humor is that the area WAS called Purgatory before building the prison .
I'm getting this picture in my mind of a random bunch of us photographers criss-crossing around this country stopping here and there to record interesting bits of local trivia. You start to realize how important these different kind of signs are in the culture.
The best one I saw but didn't stop, primarily because it was on the interstate somewhere in Idaho, was one that advertised a welcome to Idaho stop proclaiming "Free Taters For Out of Staters". It the stuff you never see sitting at home in your living room.
Four more that amused me.
1. Poor little Ely, Nevada- they WANTED to be civic-minded- but it just didn't work out.
2. Back in the day.
3. A small-town in Yukon.
4. Life's messages... on a bumper sticker.
